Sharpmaker diamond rods are AWESOME!!

Diamond rods are a "must have" for the Sharpmaker system. While the ultra fine rods are nice to have, I think the diamond rods are a necessary component (IMO).

would these rods be useful if I plan on using (just ordered one, waiting for it to arrive) the sharpmaker as more of a touch-up sharpener than an edge reprofiler?

For just touching up the medium and fine rods should work fine. Now some knives might not be at the angles that the sharpmaker is set at (30 and 40 degrees inclusive) that is when the diamond rods will come in handy.

Thanks, will put this on my (ever-growing) list of spyderco stuff to buy.

Just got my diamond rods in the mail today and plan a sharpening session for tonight. Anyone with the stones already, do you end up using both the edges and the flats of the stones or just the flats?

I tried both and found the flats equally, if not more, effective. I think I will save the corners for hawkbills and recurves.

Good stuff in this thread. I just got a sharpmaker and ultrafine diamond rods - my knives are sharper than ever, and I highly recommended the system. I don't do reprofiling much, but good to know the other diamond stones are worth the money, too.

i destroyed the edge on my military and have been struggling to get it back on the sharpmaker using the supplied rods. sounds like i may need to invest in a set of these.

The ultrafine stones are not diamond, they are ceramic. The diamond ones are the coarse grit stones.

I am a new sharp maker user but picked up the diamond rods recently and holy heck these things even take care of cpm3v like its butter!

Took out the diamond stones for their first task tonight which was reprofiling my 943 to a 30 degree back bevel. The bevel came all sorts of funky from the factory with one side being so wide that putting a 20 degree micro-bevel wasn't even an option. I had to reprofile if I wanted to sharpen this thing effectively on the sharpmaker. So, took my sharpie, my loupe and the knife and went to work. The S30V took a pretty good amount of time to thin out even with the diamond rods but would have been a fool's errand with the medium stones. I'm very glad I bought them. Once it was reprofiled, I polished up the back bevel and then threw a 20 degree micro bevel up to medium stone on it and it now kicks some ass. Shaving hair, slicing and dicing phone book paper, it's way sharper than from factory and can finally join the EDC rotation with my Spydies.
