Sharpmaker--Old v New?

I have an old (4-5 years at least?) Sharpmaker and I am wondering if the newer models don't come with a video/dvd and perhaps a different base? I purchased a set of the diamond sleeves and a set of the "ultra-fine" rods, and I use it to sharpen everything I have but I would love to have one of the instructional vids and or the newer base (with different degree angles?) Does anyone know if the newer model Sharpmakers are indeed different than the older ones and, if so, would Spyderco sell me the newer model base and the video? Just wondering. Thanks for any info you may have. Best Regards--James Falor SEMPER FI

I think the "old" rods and the "new" base (30° + 40° angles) don't correspond. Regarding the instruction/DVD look on the webside of Spyderco - click here and follow: catolog/other products - they offer the DVD for 5,95 USD.

I might add that last time I checked, newgraham.com has the instructional DVD

Thank you VERY much for the info and the links! I may just have to pony-up for the new one, although with the cost of the diamond sleeves and the ultra-fine rods, I have quite a bit invested in the old model. I appreciate the info. Have a great weekend! James SEMPER FI

I would check if the old rods can be used in the new base before ordering a new one. Just e-mail Spyderco for a definite answer.

I might be able to find out tomorrow since my dad has an old one 10+ years old and I have a new one.

Like Peter said you can order the DVD, but if the old rods still fit you would probably want a new Sharpmaker:D

Let me get this straight>> Which sharpmaker do you have? Do you have one of the much older 203 units or do you have the 204 Sharpmaker which has been out for about 6 years. I have a 2000 Spyderco Dealer's catalog in which they were available then.

You are probably going to have to buy the entire kit if you want the 30-40 degree base that comes with the 204. It never hurts to ask though. Good LUck

I honestly am not sure which model I have but, if I had to guess, I'd bet it's the 204. I'll just e-mail Spyderco and see what they tell me. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have a "back-up" anyway. I just don't want to be unable to use the rods I have--especially the diamond sleeves which were fairly expensive. Thanks everyone. I've got the older sharpmaker and recently got the Spyderco video thru NGK.

Found the video to be much more useful than the instruction booklet.

As much as I'd like to have the newer 30 degree placements in the stand, the 40s work well for me...

Thanks for that info. I don't suppose I really need the different base anyhow. Oh and Dogman, uh thanks for that info too--I guess. Jim SEMPER FI

Jim if you got a base that has the 30 & 40 degree slots then you have the 204 Sharpmaker. Another way to tell is that there is a 12 degree slot on the end of the base on the 40 degree side.

Thanks for that little bit of info JD. I do indeed have the 204 as there is a hole or "slot" in the end of the base where the two main slots are. I think I'll just e-mail Spyderco and see about purchasing the DVD. Thanks again for all the help JD and all of you. Best Regards--Jim SEMPER FI
