I have a chinese replica of the edge pro. While I don't feel good about buying the replica, I feel great about having really sharp knives with a better than satisfactory polish for a price I can afford. I also feel good about not buying a product that costs 300 dollars more than the replica because of some minor differences in quality and customer support. Most people don't need the customer support with their edge pros, and for a 300 dollar knife sharpener, that's expected. So really it comes down to whether or not you want to spend 300 dollars more for some parts that are metal versus plastic and whether you can live with very minimal play in the arm. Not enough to screw up the bevels or polish, but just enough to tell it's there. And honestly, who uses the guide marks anyway? Everyone uses an angle cube or a free app on their phone, or just matches the existing bevel, anyway. IMO, the guide marks aren't necessary, so who cares if they're exact?
What I feel the worst about is that an American company, which I would much rather support, keeps the prices so damned high that it actually impedes me from buying quality knives. Especially when I can buy a replica that doesn't infringe on any trademarks or patents, and still use very high quality stones in the replica.
I actually boycott medicine manufacturers that gouge customers after research and development costs have been recouped and substantial time has been given to earn profits and the patents have expired. It keeps good people with limited finances from purchasing American made products and pushes them to buy from China. Purchasing an edge pro for 100 dollars versus the Chinese replica for 30 is reasonable. Purchasing an edge pro for 300 dollars versus the Chinese replica isn't.
I can buy 10+ replicas that get the job done to my satisfaction for the price of one edge pro, and therein lies the problem.
