Ok - After all that I have read, I am sold on the sharpmaker. but I have a few questions. Hopefully you all can help. :)
1.) Is there, (or has there been) more than one model of Sharpmaker.
2.) What are all of the extras, or options? ( I think I want them all - Or do I?)
3.) Where is the best place, or the place you would or did get it all, and why?
Thanks in advance for all of your help and suggestions. :)
Dave.

Dave,
There has been more than one Sharpmaker. Just like our knives, it's gone through CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) over the past 30 years. The current version (204MF) has been available for quite a while though.

The Sharpmaker comes with Fine and Medium stones. Available separately are Ultra Fine stones and Diamond rods.

Included also is an instructional booklet and an instructional DVD.

As for #3, I'll let the members answer that. :)

DZ, I bought mine from knifeworks. Great store. I also trust and use New Graham, who support this site and are also great people.

My sharpmaker is great, but I do need to pick up the diamond rods (for stronger steels) and I'm going to get the ultra fine ones for my kitchen knives. Haven't bought them yet but probably will in the next couple of months.

Final plug, this thing is great. I've sharpened Kershaws, Sypdercos, and SAKs on it without a problem at all. I haven't yet perfected my technique, but it's getting better and I've only used it 3 or 4 times. It's definitely dummy proof, which is exactly what I was looking for...

Yeah, it flat gets the job done.

If the profile on your knives is at least fair you should be able to have them shaving sharp in no time.

If you have some old knives tht you want to "rehabilitate" you might consider ordering a set of the coarser grit for "re-profiling" duties. Either that or sent them in somewhere to have them reprofiled on an electric sander.

I have used mine for years, and I don't see any reason to get anything finer than the white rod that comes as part of the set. That will truly get you knife "scary sharp" to quote Sal. I'm not kidding, if you have a decent grade of steel you can literally whittle a hair. It's nuts.

Do be gentle when washing them over the sink. I am extremely clumsy and have managed to chip several end-corners of the rods on the sink. It really doesn't have any neagtive impact on its utility, but do try and be gentle.

I've gotten most of mine from Bass Pro Shops as Christmas presents. My oringinal came from a local gun shop that unforunately has closed it's doors; they always had the best deals on them.

Well I pulled the trigger, and ordered it yesterday, with the Extra fine rods as well. Oh - and I had them include a Stretch 2 CF with the order. :) :) I can't wait to try them out.
Thanks all for the input.
Dave.

My sharpmaker edges have some chips on them. The flats are fine Can I still use them?

Enjoy the Sharpmaker and carbon fiber Stretch!!!!:D

The UF will be great investment. I would also suggest picking up a DMT coasrse or 120 micron stone for the times you need to remove lots of metal. They are much more coarse then the Diamond rods that are offered for the 204.

Make sure to watch the dvd several times before you even start working with it. Read the booklet and be prepared for a short learning curve. A sharpie marker will be your best friend when you are first learning the 204.

Thanks, All
I will be sure to start slow, and with a sharpie
Dave

Use the sharpie to mark the edge of your blade. When working it on the sharpmaker, you will be able to see where the edge is being removed because the marker will be gone! When all of the marker is removed from the edge, you now have the bevel set at the angle indicated by the sharpmaker.

what region is the DVD? i live in Europe and we have dvd region code 2

If you run it on your computer's optical drive, you should have no problem. Take note however, that you can only play it four times before the optical drive permanently sets itself to the N.American region code.

You can only play it 4 times, or change the region 4 times?

Why do they do that, btw?

You do not need to worry about region code, the DVD operates in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
I am also in Europe (Portugal) and it works fine
