sharpmaker rods

I heard there is a new stone (more abrasive) coming out for the sharpmaker that will enable easier(quicker) sharpening on the Sebbies and other knives if they have become dull and not kept "up to sharp". Any info out there about this?

This seems to be a topic that remains very quiet. Is there possibly some problem Spyderco is having with the production of these new rods. I believe there has been some discussion of the diamond rods as far back as a year or so but I still haven't seem them yet? :(

The new diamond rods (actually sleeves***ERRORONEOUS*** ) are in the 2002 catalogs.

There's nothing on the website (that I could find), could you describe the sleeves and give some idea of cost and availability? Thx.

Sure. They are hollow metal rods, shaped like Sharpmaker rods. They are basically diamond coated sleeves that fit over regular Sharpmaker rods.***NOTE THAT THIS IS ERROR: SEE SAL'S POST BELOW***

The best info I have indicates that they are still 6 months away from release.

We'll have the beginning of the first production run next week. They are a 400 mesh diamond plated on to a 7" (178mm) hollow steelrod. We'll be working up costs next week as well. I am sorry to say they will be expensive. I am pleased to say they will profile a very dull blade in a minute or so.

This is probably a good time to also mention that we will be making available, on an experimental test basis, ultra fine ceramic triangles as well. They will be available in the next week or so through SFO only while we test the market. The test pieces will sell for about $12 each ($24 pair).

The diamonds have been a long time coming, apologies. The project was far more difficult than first imagined. We're also playing around with other meshes (grits) as well as other shapes. We'll be getting some of the first pieces off to Carlos and a few key dealers next week. They should be shipping production just after the SHOT Show.

BTW, Joe Talmadge has had a pair of protos for a while. he's agreed to help me with some testing (Sorry Joe). Maybe we can get him to comment?

This is very good news! It will go the "final mile" to correcting what was the only real problem with the Sharpmaker--the difficulty of doing a major re-profile. I look forward to picking up a set.:)

ooohh man, gimme dem rods! I'll even go with a set of extra-fines, just for grins, if you'll only pleez send us those diamond sleeves!!

hey Carlos - I called the factory outlet at the number you gave above, and when I asked about extra-fine rods they acted like I was talking to the Air Force about little green men - they "had no confirmation" that such rods existed. ???? How to get?:(

I guess that SFO doesn't know yet -- Sal is ahead of the game (as usual).

This is probably a good time to also mention that we will be making available, on an experimental test basis, ultra fine ceramic triangles as well. They will be available in the next week or so through SFO only while we test the market. The test pieces will sell for about $12 each ($24 pair).

I also called the Spyderco Factory Store and was suprised to here the same answer. After questioning a little I found that the extra fine rods come only in the benchstone. They were not aware of extra fine rods coming out in the near future at all.
I quess only Sal knows for sure?:(

As Carlos mentioned, SFO doesn't know yet. They should be available in about a week.

Sal just had the 204 ultra fine stones delivered today here @ S.F.O.
Man these things are wonderfull. Crazzzzzy Shaarrrrppppp.

But how will the ceramic rods fit into their slots on the base of the 204 if there are sleeves over them? Won't this make them too wide to go into the slots while sharpening?

Regardless, I'll probably buy a set anyways...:p

The diamond triangles are not sleeves. They are the same size as the ceramic triangles and fit the same way.

Carlos, yours should be there today or tomorrow.
