Sharpmaker Warrenty ???

How will that cost them $1000's in the end? You said yourself you only own 3 Spydercos. Those Chris Reeve knives are what's expensive. That's why they take such good care of theirs. It's like buying an extended warranty with the knife.

Because I Buy ALOT of knives and have been considering several of theirs until now. Like the Caly, Military, Hossom Fixed Blades, and several others and all of these are over $100 and knowing me, would buy more. With buying just them alone, would add up to quite a bit. If they want a hassle over a $10 item that was bad from them in the beginning and they dont want to make it right ( without all the shipping and money order BS ), they can do without my $1000. I received several emails and pm's stating similar issues with the ceramic. Some stated it was no big deal, others feel the way I do. I guess I am the only one bringing it to your attention at the moment. The 3 I have will be my only ones.

Don't get me wrong here, I completely understand your frustration. What would you have Spyderco do? Send you a free replacement based on your word alone? I would think that they would need a little more than that. As has been suggested already, why not return it to the place of purchase for a replacement? You're comparing a $10 ceramic rod to a CR knife, doesn't that sound a little far-fetched? Not a good reason to condemn Spyderco, JMO.

I am comparing one companies customer service to the others. I am not paying $12 to get a an item replaced that was packaged damaged in the first place. If it was just me paying to send it to them, that I can understand, but for me to pay to have it returned to me is rediculas. If I damaged it, that would be different, but when I opened it, it was like that. I left the package on the table, when I got up it was already taken out for garbage. I was going to email spyderco the upc number so they could see if they had an issue with that lot number. So because I dont have the package, I cant return it to the company of purchase.

I bought a dvd new in package on ebay last week. I got it and opened it, it had a big scratch on it and it pixilates because of the scratch. I contacted them and they sent me a new one, no questions asked. The price of the dvd, $10.

Spyderco lost me as a customer, just as benchmade did awhile back. I had a benchmade that was no longer made and needed repair. They do not stock parts, but they did offer me a whooping 10% off any knife they make. I threw the benchmade in the garbage.

Maybe thats why I pay extra for CRK, they stand behind their product. Regardless of price. I am not just paying for great customer service from CRK, I am paying for a quality product.

Its ALL BS !!!

The funny thing is, their website claims they started out making knives sharp and then made sharp knives. I would think that means they should have some pride in their roots.... I still love spyderco though, they are like the Angelina Jolie of knives, they couldn't ever lose my attention.

Hope my post helps to calm you a bit.

If I understand you correct, you bought the SM from an online-dealer and you bought it there, as he had the best acceptable price for you. Right?

If so, your online-dealer is your first line contact and not the manufacturer. He sold you the SM and is reponsible. I'm sure you can settle the matter with your dealer. Or is European law and US law different?

What in case a dealer sells damaged parts in full awareness, as he got them for a bargain ... this is only an example! Why should the manufacturer be responsible for that?

Don't get me wrong, as European I fully understand what Spyderco does.

Yes, seller is (and should be) his "first line contact", but not last.

(Even though, by EU law, you probably refer to Directive 1999/44/EC that states "The seller shall be liable to the consumer for any lack of conformity which exists at the time the goods were delivered.", there is still Article 4 (Right of redress)).

In the end, a manufacturer is responsible for warranty.

What in case a dealer sells damaged parts in full awareness, as he got them for a bargain ... this is only an example! Why should the manufacturer be responsible for that?

I disagree with this "example". Knowingly selling sub-par goods (without advertising them as such) would (at least in my opinion) represent a case of false advertising (http://definitions.uslegal.com/f/false-advertising/) or theft by deception (http://definitions.uslegal.com/t/theft-by-deception/).
Basing this on the assumption that seller is knowingly committing crime is a bit far stretched IMHO.

The simple fact is, if you pay for something NIB and it is defected. You shouldn't have to pay half of what you originally paid for the NIB item, just to get it fixed.

You nailed it perfectly.

Paying return shipping is insult to injury...a mistake is a mistake, poor quality control shouldn't equate to the customer paying the majority of the cost of the warranty replacement...a single fine rod cost all of maybe $2 for Spyderco to replace. It's one thing to ask the customer to share the cost of the warranty service (obviously it costs Spyderco money) but to put the majority of the cost on the customer for a NIB product...bad business.

How are the attempts to extort knives from Spyderco workin' for ya these days?

3G, he TURNED DOWN Sal's attempt to fix his problem in that thread? I'm confused....

My company (another industry) accepts a digital copy of the receipt from purchase and digital images of the issue in question. Cheap and effective proof. We send out replacements free of charge if the warranty claim is legit. Gotta love digital media and the intraweb :D

A copy of the receipt or a photo of the rod should work.

JCurd, Per "3G, he TURNED DOWN Sal's attempt to fix his problem in that thread? I'm confused...." 3Gs comment doesn't make sense because he doesn't understand what that whole thread was about. In a later thread Glesser kind of asked him to put it to rest, but 3G is compelled. In that thread, Glesser indicated he offered me a freebie not as a mitzvah but as a ploy to lure me into revealing my identity. Note that 3G is such a delusional Internet Sheriff he even named himself Three Guardsmen to reflect his personal mission. Gotta love the crazies on the internet :)

Wouldn't he need your identity in some way if he was to send you a free knife? Were you planning on never revealing your identity? Now I'm confused...

On a side note, I recently bough a sharpmaker and there was a small chip on one of the rods, but I took it back to the company I bought it from and they replaced it. Seems like the company that sold it to you oughtta be willing to do the same, just my opinion.
Additionally, I love the sharpmaker. I've been a diamond pad sharpener for years and years until I recently bought two knives with recurves that made sharpening with a diamond rod difficult. Got the sharpmaker and I'll probably give the diamond pads away. Seriously love this tool.

I hope this all gets resolved for you one way or another, it seems like someone should be willing to help you out with this, but sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet when you get a lemon. I've been there, and it is frustrating.

Did the company that sold it to you refuse to replace it? I may have missed if you ever mentioned them...

I'll say you are! You apparently missed the part where Brownshoe made the initial suggestion that Sal "fix his problem," and told him which specific sort of knife would "fix his problem." It wasn't until Brownshoe learned that there was no new Terzuola model on the horizon that he "TURNED DOWN" anything.

I tend not to place too much weight into what morally challenged individuals think of me. It makes life so much easier.;)
