Sharpmaker...whats so great?

What's so great about the Sharpmaker?

It's fast and easy to use and puts a very sharp edge on your knives.
I don't have the diamond rods and I use a stone to reprofile and edge. The 204 just keeps a nice edge on your blades.

I got a Gerber retractable diamond rod sharpener, taped it into the groove on one of my Sharpmaker rods, and now I have a diamond rod, for $10. :)

How well does the Sharpmaker work on Striders?

I'm going out to get a sharpening system today specifically for my Striders, but I don't know which to get.

I got lucky a while back and picked up an older Sharpmaker at a yard sale for 5 bucks. I set it up, assumed that you simply kept the blade straigt and perpendicular to the table. I was amazed.

My dad was a butcher and I handled knives of all kinds at an early age. I could always put a good edge on most any knife. I thought gadgets like this were for igonorant wusses. I was wrong. This thing really works.

I emailed Sharpmaker, because I couldn't figure out what the brass rods were for and they sent me a manual within a week. Before I got the manual, I slipped and cut myself, something I virtually never do, and then realized what to do with the brass rods .

It's hard to imagine what someone could do wrong with this, seemingly, foolproof instrument. BTW, I use the 10 strokes one side, then the other as that's the way I've always sharpened knives on stone or steel. My 2 cents.

Well its simple fairly cheap and there is no oil or mess involved. You do need to have a knife that the angles match the Sharpmaker closely otherwise reprofiling is a slow chore but I have done it many times. Its also very easy to take a knife that is just a touch dull and just stroke it a few times to bring it back to full razor. Lansky requires clamping and oil and lots of mess. Plus I have used a Lansky and its a serious accidental cut waiting to happen. Its also limited to small blades and on longer ones like 5 inches its impossible to keep the angle constant. Great for once a year sharpening of a small knife. The sharpmaker is clean and more versitile. Just dont round your knife tip with it by accident.
