I have one "tourist" khukri in my collection, and am interested in buying one for use.I realize that sharpening one presents special problems, but how sharp do the HI models (probably the WWII) come out of the box?I know that this is a subjective question, but I just want to know in general terms. Thanks!

They range from "chopping" sharp to razor sharp. But we have sharpening experts here who can tell you who to get the knife to a razor edge in five minutes. And the edge holds pretty well.

My village khukuri (made by non-HI kami in Dhankuta but carries same warranty as standard HI models) had a "medium sharp" edge that was sharper than what I expected for a knife this thickness and size. Retention has been great, except for when I missed my target while messing around and the edge nailed my bench vise instead of the wood it was holding! Doh!

I have no exposure to new, "official" HI khukuris, but if they are anywhere near the quality as my village model, then you will be very pleased indeed.

Of the half dozen or so HI khukuris, all have been very sharp. The 18th century easily shaves hair, with any portion of the blade. The salyan "Stubby" will shave hair but is too big for much testing.

I try to keep his shiny part away from flesh.
WW11, and serupatis shave, but not like the 18th century.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?
And just what are you going to do with this one that you can't do with the others?
What is the purpose of all these knives anyhow??

Thanks for input, Jim. I think the general concensus is almost nobody is disappointed with the sharpness as received. Those who want a keen razor's edge simply put one on the knife if it is not up to their sharpness standards.

As some of you may know sharpening is not my strong suit. Under the expert tutalage of my father in law I was able to attain a razors edge on several of my smaller blades this weekend. The razor still ludes me on the khuks though I am getting better.

Due to my ineptness in this area my AK's edge has a new bevel. The blade no longer flows directly into the edge but rather has a more defined angle. Is this a problem? Should I try to reattain the original bevel or work with what I have now? (about 30 degrees)

Paul the Maul - sounds like a name for one of the Super Salyans.

Mine are chopping sharp with the odd razor sharp, out of the box.

As Cliff points out it is not the initial edge that counts. It is the edge that you put on and are able to maintain that counts.

I have had no problem getting any of the H.I. razor sharp. Bill can put a decent edge on it before shipping. Someone on the forum will likely help you if you have diffiulties. Also, there are many sharpening techniques around here.

A note of interest. Will Kwan is one of our most respected sharpening experts. I always try to find the dullest blade to send him because of this.
