Was wondering if u guys keep yr khukris shavin sharp or just edged (for use not display) coz I reckon that a really sharp blade might not be able to hold an edge better than a slightly less sharp khukris when choppin wood. Also do u guys use any protectant on yr knives? usually dun put any oil and it doesnt seem to have an effect on it. All i use is a chinese polishing powder which is very much like chalk.

Barnard: I keep my "camp" khukuri rather dull on the chopping part - sort of axe sharp with that kind of edge. Closer to the handle, I keep a sharper edge, though, so I can cut rope quickly.

As for protectant, when I go to the field, pretty isn't in the cards - I usually coat the khukuri blade with something thick and hard-to-remove.

Sharper edges are much safer to work with as they are far less likely to deflect and the higer polish you apply the more durable impact wise it will get. If your knife can't hold a fine edge while chopping, get a new knife, there are lots that can, don't alter your sharpening methods.

I generally use thicker oils on my khukuris because I don't use them for food preperation. If I was I would use mineral oil.
