sharpness test

New, ultimate sharpness test:

1. Look at what you want to cut.
2. Start to think about using your knife.
3. Present your knife.
4. If the object hurls itself apart in fear of your edge before you are able to bring the knife to bear, your knife is sharp.
5. If the object disintegrates rather than face your fearsome blade while you're still just thinking about it, then your knife is really sharp.
6. If the object explodes when you look at it, you're probably some kind of mutant.

I just sharpened on a 4000 grit stone (tormek) and it barely cut my arm after nearly the entire length of the blade. However, it sure cut hair on my leg pretty well (maybe better than 800 grit stone) and it cut the handle of a grocery bag about the same. I dunno what to think...

*sigh*....maybe I need that damned PT50.... I want consistency in my sharpness test.
Howdy!

First time reading this thread and I can’t help but notice that you’re still talking about cutting yourself.

You seemed to indicate in your first post that you wanted to stop because you were worried about what people might think and infections.

I certainly don’t want to offend, and I have no idea if this really is a problem for you, but your repeated messages about cutting yourself are a bit concerning.

Just in case you aren’t already aware, you should know that this behavior could be linked to other issues in your life unrelated to knife sharpening. It might benefit you to investigate this, either on your own or with the help of a counselor.

If this is just the way you like to test edges, then just keep doing you. :)

No offense taken! : )

Life is good : )

I think I need to find a phone book with those thin pages. hahaha

I should post about how I freeze myself in the snow to recover from hard cardio sessions. Can you imagine all the crazy comments I'll get from some of the ladies here? hahaha, i like to have fun : )

A mod closed a thread stating that everyone should focus more on knives and less on each other. It made me realize how much we all love to express ourselves. Excellent advice!!!

Jokes aside don't be afraid to get help, there should be some local resources in your area it might be worth looking into. You're going to be with yourself for a long time so it's always good to make sure you take care of yourself.

How does the BM with no edge do?😄Dude, stop cutting yourself. If it’ll shave it’s plenty sharp.

You just did. Like an ice bath that athletes use all the time? Most of us aren't ladies but some are. Not sure why that matters in the least.

A paper cut test is just fine. I like to shave some hair. If you feel you must keep cutting yourself, something is wrong. Seek help.

i would seriously listen
to the knife sharpness advice
given by a professional
knife sharpening expert
sadly, my own knife sharpening skills
is no where near this..
Hmmm... I like the hair test... but now I'm very disappointed with my blade!!! I have work to do now....

Thanks!

I want to insult you guys for having a strong opinion about things you know very little about. But those insults will just further entrench yourselves in the little bubble you live in. I do feel like an idiot addressing the comments again but I just love to insult people who talk about things they know nothing about.

Let's try to make the next thread about knives and not one another. I know it's not always easy.

Borderline personality disorder

You should get help.

My head is shaved so the free hanging hair test is a problem. :)

As a substitute, I know I've gotten a knife very sharp when I can pass the blade through my arm hair--not touching the skin--and it will tree top the hairs.

Haha, I rescheduled my afternoon workout to sharpen my mini Emissary at a lower angle. I was able to cut the hair slowly like in the last video. Difficult to compare hair follicles... Either way, I'm happy with the results! Thank you for the challenge!

fantastic!
time to work on cutting technique :)
develop using skills
and practise makes perfect
thus making all the effort sharpening worthwhile
