Sharpness Testing

I've tried the free-hanging toilet paper test but seem to fail it repeatedly. Perhaps it's because I used the kind of soft toilet paper that pampers your bottom with loving care, or maybe I just have to work on my technique.

Each and every one of you have entirely too much time on, and sharp objects in, your hands.

Didn't I tell you that it is the ultimate sharpness test.

We in Finland like to think that our toilet paper is the most gentle of all....
When I manage fhtpt(free hanging toilet paper test) with serla satin(my favorite tp brand for fhtpt) I'll challenge Joe T.

Keep on trying!

John,

I tried the slicing the tops of my arm hairs off, with blade held about 1/4" above the skin. Half dozen MTs, case full of Daltons and everything else I tried including a regularly used and stropped straight razor didn't pass this test. Joe T must be pretty darn good at sharpenning (or either he uses hair spray on his forearm to keep the hairs stiff

This was the subject of another thread. I recall someone favoring a styrofoam cup for testing. If you could make a clean cut without shredding the cup it was sharp.

I tried it today and slicing worked OK, but push cuts shredded the cup some. The knives were fairly sharp- Blade Forum Spyderco Native, Busse Battle Mistress, and Umfaan.

Perhaps whoever uses that method can post some insights.
