I find common newsprint still the best overall testing media.
A slow draw-cut along the full edge will quickly identify any problem areas or areas of differing edge quality.
For edges with acute angles, I do several firm-pressure full-edge draw-cuts into hardwood or hard plastic, followed by newsprint draw-cuts to reveal any potential wire-edge problems.
Newsprint is common, available and uniform in content - whether it's from the Boston Globe, LA Times or Denver Post.
