Used coarse DMT to grind steep side till it was roughly even with the other. Then set up the sharpmaker with grey stones, 20 or so passes, now I'm cutting magazine paper.

So of course I think, "why not sharpen some more" 20 more passes, now I can't cut jack.

What did you use to do the "20 more passes"?

Well, there's an issue.

What works is moving from the gray Sharpmaker stones (or any stone of a similar grit) to progressively finer grit stones,
or to a strop loaded with compound of even finer grit.

In other words, once you've already developed a utility sharp edge on the gray Spyderco stones, move to a finer grit stone
(rather than continuing to use the gray stones).

And then to progessively finer grits...
