shaving with your edc

the idea of an edc straight razor sharp is absurd because nobody wants to put that through rough everday work after getting it that sharp. But how many of you here can or have taken an edc class knife and stropped an edge to it that you could or did shave your face with? And did you get a quality shave? And no before I get screamed at this is not in the wrong forums because it's a quest I am on in regards to sharpening technique and know how.

It can be done but the shave will suck because of the blades thickness.

I haven't but most of my EDC-type knives are capable at any given moment. I keep my primary carry knife, a Stretch II ZDP, tree-topping sharp at all times. I feel confident I could do my cheeks okay, but I wouldn't attempt anything else.

And agreed knifenut, it wouldn't be pleasant.

I've touched up spots i've missed in my truck before with an EDC if ive got a few stray hairs, but I won't sit there and shave with one.

My EDC is always shaving sharp. But I wouldn't shave with it. The blade geometry is wrong for a face shaving razor. Getting that sharp isn't difficult. Keeping it that sharp is easy. Wanting it that sharp is just nuts. :D

I shave my mustache with my EDC--pretty much leave everything else alone. In any case, I tried it out one day because I didn't have any razors and I ran out of cream, figured, "Hey, I'll try what Murray Carter did," and it worked great. Haven't seen the need to go buy an actual razor or cream since then.

Jackknife, on the Trad forum, writes about his Scout Master showing him and the other boys how to shave with a sharpened penknife

Haven't ever done a complete shave, but my "bench test" for a fine edge is if it can dry shave the hairs off my cheek and jaw line. This is also about the point where it will whittle hairs.

Kenny, I used several of mine that way for one year (a full shave) . It worked well . There is a learning curve and at first I got some nicks but you get better . Now, I shave with a 1950's Rolls Razor and enjoy it more . DM

I only took a Spyderco UKPK on a trip through Italy and Romania. I shaved with it in the morning, used it for EDC tasks during the day and touched up the edge before bed on my Sharpmaker (yes I took the whole kit with me Diamond through Ultra fine stones). Stropping was only done on my leather belt. Shave was fine, but not as comfortable as my actual straight razor. My wife even trimmed my neck line with it for me.

I also had Tom Krein regrind a Spyderco Atlantic Salt to be my EDS (everyday shaver) which has worked very well. My only issue is I prefer a shorter blade for shaving, but I did not know that before trying to shave with the regrind. :)

Yes, just alittle pratice is all it takes to get a good shave . I noticed the grind and the steel mattered . Seemed 440C and CPM-154 gave better shaves over S30V and S60V . Your mileage may vary . DM

Well, I like to grow out my beard, but I hate having a mustache. The interesting thing is that the belly in my EDC is perfect for shaving my mustache around my lips, it's actually easier to get it in there than a safety or straight razor. Haven't cut myself once, probably thanks to that.

Agreed the knifes belly is good for shaving that area . I try to only shave twice a week whether I need to or not and no more than three x's . DM ;)

I have shaved with several of my edc knives. It actually got to be routine for a while. Now I haven't shaved except for trims for several months. If you know how to shave with a straight razor, you should have no problems shaving with a (properly sharpened) edc blade. My angles aren't even that narrow, I keep almost every knife I own at or just under 30 degrees inclusive.

I do it often, but it is not like I plan to shave with my EDC. Usually around mid morning (after my coffee kicks in) I will discover a rogue hair or two that I missed while shaving. Out comes my blade and takes care of the "problem".

Some times I get a little burn from it, but often times there are no ill effects.

This probably happens 2 or 3 times a month.
