SHBA Passaround 2012

nice little photo opportunity, we are about a mile outside of the boundary of the dismal swamp and have plenty of huge creepy crawlies.

The girlies came and got me and said I had to kill a spider for them. when they said it was outside the house I ignored it for a few minutes but this is what had them agitated

come on that thing is not that big you put a HACK in there instead of the SHBA right.

I'll get the rest of my review up in this post in a few days. The SHBA has almost finished its 2500 mile journey and should be in HookahHabib's hands shortly.

Hey guys, looking like a good pass around so far, with some great pics and review action! Thanks

I just wanted to let you know the SHBA safely got to my family's house in the LA area...unfortunately I ended up having to run up to Santa Cruz earlier than expected to finish up my move! I'll be back in the LA area no later than Monday, at which point I'll get outside and post a review. I must apologize in advance that the process of moving has had me a little busier than expected so I may not have time to do as elaborate of a review as I would have liked but I'll do my part :)

In an interesting turn of events, I happened to score my very own INFI SHBA yesterday!

She's a bit of a fatty at .31 thick, but has been sitting in a safe her whole life and is ready for some action...I can already tell she's quite happy to have been rescued from that dark safe ;) Apparently ground by Jerry and is one of the sharpest v-ground factory Busses I've seen so far...I'm already feeling some serious love for this blade :D

Up until getting my hands on this little beastly beauty I had really been loving my A2 Horton Archback, but I have a feeling the SHBA will be spending a lot more time at my side than the Horton (may even sell the Horton!), so for my contribution to the pass around, I'm planning to do a simple comparison of Mulder's A2 SHBA to my INFI SHBA and my A2 Horton:

As of now, I'm thinking I'll have Mulders SHBA en route to the next participant by a week from tomorrow...

OK back to moving!

Congrats on the SHBA HH. I'm interested in seeing your comparison between the Busse A2 and the Infi.

So has it been a few days yet? :D

In Busse-kin time I think it's only been 2, maybe 3 days tops ;)

Sorry, the move has been slower than expected and only made it back to LA late Friday. Today was the first day I wasn't fully wiped from my crazy week moving out of Santa Cruz and I got bombed with family and holiday obligations (woke up forgetting that it was actually Labor Day today...). Looking like tomorrow afternoon I should finally be able to have some fun with this...

I must say its going to take some creativity unless I drive a couple hours out into the forest though! The San Fernando Valley is a concrete jungle!

Gittn-R-Duuuun as we speak and fixin to have her on her way back home to you by Thursday or Friday at the latest Dave. If you want it sooner, I will happily comply....your generosity and willingness to share in the old school Busse goodness is much appreciated

A bit frustrated as I just discovered that my mom's suburban gardener threw out a bundle of branches I was drying in the sun to use for my review purposes...currently trying to improvise some other ideas so I can contribute more than just a superficial visual comparison between the two models and steels and the standard mix of cardboard slicing, feather sticking, body hair shaving, etc ;)

So I've started my little review. This first part will be comparison pics and initial impressions of the knives. I originally intended to compare Mulders A2 and my INFI SHBAs with the Horton pictured below, but I just sold it earlier today and don't want to mess with my buyer's new knife:

Here are some comparison pics:

The A2 SHBA is .29 thick, has solid pins, and mild contouring in the scales, which appear to be polished and give the micarta more contrast and whole knife a really nice look. I imagine the solid pins must ad some weight because my INFI SHBA, at .31 thick, using hollow brass tubes and non-contoured micarta scales feels the same, if not a little bit lighter. I would need a scale to really know because they feel the so similar and I don't have a good one here at my family's house. Both balance at right around the same point, on the back border of the tube/pin closest to the ricasso. I LOVE the ergonomics of this knife. The handle is comfortable in every grip I can think of trying. The blade is wide enough to hold near the tip for real fine work. The small choil allows the hand to rest pretty close to the cutting edge, and doesn't interfere with close cutting the way a full size choil would on a similarly sized knife...my guess is that the small choil could also work well as a fire steel striker in the same way people use it on the older Basic models although I haven't tried that yet. As others have pointed out, a rear-ward grip, or two finger grip for chopping also looks like it would work (aided with the lanyard's sense of security), especially since this little knife has some good weight behind it.

I like the look and feel of the contoured micarta scales, so much so that I thought about sending mine to Garth for the same work, but after further handling, I ultimately decided I like the feel of the non-contoured scales a little more for this handle shape. They fill my hand perfectly and I think it would feel better for longer term use...however this is a very individual thing, so ymmv :) On a larger, wider chopper handle or knife in the 7" and up range, I generally prefer the hand shaped scales.

As far as use, all I did this evening was a quick shaving test. Mulder's SHBA came to me pretty sharp, shaving sharp. However my SHBA has just received a convex edge from Ban and is screaming, stupid sharp right now. The results reflected that. The little section where I used Mulder's SHBA did take off a good amount of hair, but I couldn't get as close of a shave and it took a few more passes to really clean the area up. Mine shaved much closer and pretty much had its area cleared in two passes, with a third one just to get a couple stray hairs...

after: the area closest to the camera was done with my SHBA, the smaller area to the rear by Mulder's

Light started to run out, so I'll resume testing tomorrow afternoon. Looking around the side of my house, I found the following which will make a good starting point:

Forgive the cell phone pics, luckily they didn't come out too bad...

If you have any requests let me know and I'll try to get it done.

Nice start to the review hookah. I agree, its an incredibly comfortable handle. I look forward to the rest.

Just a quick update, pics and rest of review will be posted later this afternoon or evening, and Dave I'll also pm you a tracking number once I've got your knife en route to Alaska later today :-)
