SHBM History

Cobalt, nice start on the SHBM history wiki. I hope other prehistoric hogs will add their collective knowledge.

Two questions.

Where do the "1 of 300" group fit into this timeline?

When are you going to post a pic of your ENTIRE SHBM collection?

well the 300 were the first 300 SHBM's. Within that group are the 1 of 6 as well as LE's made during that time, like Chucks #37 and however many more were made at the tme. The handles on the 300 varied from totally smooth to partially ribbed and fully ribbed for your confort:D
Numbers 2 and 4 counting from the eft are 1 of 300's. Number one counting from the left is a 1 of 300 LE, so you can see they came with all three of those handles in the first 300.

Thanks for the post Dennis!! :D I'll have to check which one's I have on my 1/300 :p HOW in the world did you end up with TWO of the rarest handled SHBM's? ;)

in the same manner you ended up with a 1 of 300 ;) :D

I did not start as a Dealer till the Las Vegas Custom in Febuary 2000.

At that time Straight Battles Mistresses were still available to order.

I do not have my notes where I can get to them right now, that will happen after I get Moved and unpack.

At my First Blade West, Sept 2000 I got my first look at the Straight Handled Steel Hearts known as " Ghosts", I would assume, based on that, that the Straight Models were available at that time as well.

My First recollection of the E-Models would have been Blade 2001.

The first Busse knife made with the Hole type Handle fasteners sold in October 1999(a Badger, My Son Bought it)

Most of the knives I was Shipped for sale in the first half of 2000 were the Mostly Grooved(early) and Fully Groved(later) Handle types, also during that time the Steel Hearts got a little bigger, maybe as much as 1/2 an Inch in Length.

Then the Hole type fasteners started being more common, with people wanting the hole type thinking this as proof that those knives were INFI, this was especially true of the Badgers.

Then Suddenly the Shop ran out of Badgers and Stopped making them(With out telling me) so I then had the last Badger available for retail sale.

I would need to look at my notes to say exactly when I was last Shipped Straight Battle Mistresses and Steel Hearts, But I do remember that the Badgers ran out Early.

The Mean Streets continued during the begining of the E-model production.

There was also a box of 73 Infi Police Recruits found, finished and sold, three different finishes, Early(Flat) latter, (Bead blasted and a Few Crinkle)

The interesting part of the Dating the handles shown by Cobalt is what is under the Handles, those marks are for Jerry to tell just What is What, for Refferencing of any knives come back for repair or replacment.

Jerry is constantly Striving to improve the knives, within the Battles Mistresses the heat treat has Varied enough for there to be an overall Hardness in RC rating, at least in the early years, he may just have it all down by now, The Early knives were a little Harder, all this has been talked about before, So I am not giving away any Secrets.

Cobalt, I see you conveniently overlooked my second question, so I'll just put it up here again. :p

So, how many SHSHII's and SHBM's went through your hands that had diamond quilted micarta handles?? That you remember.. I know of a coule comming up over the years. So 2000 was the transition year for SH to E-handles and that kinda makes sense.

Guy, I just collect the handles. Ducci cut the blades off long ago. :D
seriously, I really don't have that many.

Something else to note.
If you notice, some of the earlier BMs have a rounded off area on the micarta where you thumb might go. It doesn't seem to be 100% consistent with some of the other features, but it is certainly not present on later versions.

Dunno whatchu talkin bout. Send em to me so I can see! :D

Thanks for the info Cobalt.

The only SHBM that I kept is a partially grooved/slotted. It was the most comfortable since I was never able to snag a smooth one.

My favorites are the smooth/slotted/smooth grips in both the SHSH and SHBA's. This is what I kept.

The same with the hollow fasteners just never felt as good in the hand IMO.

Rob, no problem, I think we can say that the handle age goes with the SHSHII as well. I have a slotted screw SHSH with the artially grooved handle like you say as well. But I prefer my SHBM's. Hey at least we like the same handles:thumbup:
