I’ve owned probably a dozen SHBM’s over the last 25+ years. This is my favorite. Instead of looking like all the other safe-queens, or looking like it’s seen all kinds of who-knows-what, hold-my-beer-and-watch abuse, this one looks like it’s lived in the real world but still has the original factory edge.
The information I have is that, when new, it was used very lightly and then stripped. But the person stripping it didn’t remove the decarb, which caused it to patina, eventually developing the look you see today. After the strip job it was put away and never used again. Pretty sure I’m the third owner.
So it has the old-school look of a user with lots of character but has the original, still-bright factory edge—amazing to survive more than two decades with both—and of course it’s asym. Kind of like the knife version of a “rat-rod” vintage car or truck restoration, except that it’s 100% original.
To me personally, the real value of its condition was that if I ever decided to use it, the looks wouldn’t ever change much—it’s always going to look like a user—and since it has the original factory edge, I’d be assured that no unknown abuse in a past life might have weakened it in any way. I know it still has its full “performance life” ahead of it.
