After months of ownership, finally she calls and says excitedly:

"Hey I used the pink knife to open a can of tuna!!!"

She is referring to the Spyderco Native I bought her. FYI apparently she couldn't find a can opener? How do I respond to this? Anyone know how well S30V holds up against opening canned food? *cringe*

EDIT: this is why she has her own knife, and not one of mine. Someone remind me why I didn't buy her the $5 Big 5 Mtech special?

It depends on how she did it. If she punched a bunch of holes in the top and then pryed it open you may be in the clear and will only have to touch up the first half inch or so at the tip. The tip on that Native will easily slide into and out of the top of that can without much damage. Kind of like connect the dots until the top is open.

If she decided to twist the knife at all you will not be happy trying to sharpen the chips and nicks out of the edge.

Good thing you have a DMT kit. Depending on how she did it you might have to break out the extra coarse.

You may want to call her back and tell her not to eat the tuna as their probably chips and pieces of the blade in it, sharp metal shavings can play havoc on ones intestinal tract. I know two people who died from puncturing their intestines with a splinter from a tooth pick and then went septic.

i used to use a folder to open cans of ravioli for lunch at work. it was still shaving afterwards... you might be in the clear... it was in D2, not S30V. maybe its a good time for her to learn how to sharpen

A can of tuna? Really? You're worried about this? It might...might have messed up the edge a little bit...but that's probably about it. How hard do you think those cans are? :p

At least she wasn't calling from the emergency room. Seems like a good way to chop a finger off if you slip with a razor sharp knife.

Post pics in any case if you can. I opened a can of beans with a Gerber Ripstop, I think that was/is the knife I am thinking of, and the worst of that was a couple of dents in the edge. Was pretty simple to sharpen out. Hopefully not that bad....

It was an emergency survival situation after all :D

I agree with the others, not the safest way to open a can, and I wouldn't encourage her to continue, but she is using the knife.

My thought too. I was cringeing for the knife and her fingers.

How about just getting her a nice can opener and quietly removing the Native before she hurts herself.

hmmm... Well, her folder has seen more action that some. I doubt the can was damaging to the knife that much, and if it had major chipping then the would have stoped and not continued to open the can. I think it will just dull the hell out of the blade but should be an easy fix.

Also its her knife now, she can do what ever she wants with it. That said I'm glad she didn't hurt herself.

Before getting too freaked out over this (as others have stated) be thankful she wasn't hurt, inspect the knife, calmly explain what a knife is for, take her shopping for a pink can opener, make her lunch using new can opener to open the spewgagmeatios :barf: , have a blade sharpening shindig... Desert after successfully sharpening the Native entirely optional. Never buy a cheap knife for someone you care about (spank me ima snob ) so forget the Big5 special...
