She just called and said:

At my mother in laws funeral I loaned by OHT Sak to my sister in law not knowing what she was going to do with it. She used it to pry open several sunken flower holders and then clean them out. I threw the knife away. Every thing in it wobbled.

I agree with the can opener, make sure you buy her one. Tell her calmly that what she did can be dangerous, and that you would appreciate it if she used the knife to cut things, just not cans.

So yeah, buy a P38 or P51 for her keychain or purse and make sure you give her a lesson on how to use it.

Does she need a bottle opener or any other small tools, while you are at it?

You don't buy the $5 Mtech since you don't want it to fail and close on her fingers.

Hahah 666, what a coincidence...too funny.

Yeah I guess I am lucky she didn't injure herself...=/

I wonder what that means that I was more worried about the edge on the knife, than her fingers? Eeek...

Now I feel like a jerk.

I'm expecting a similar message from my sister whom I just sent a zdp 189 delica to. All I have to say my friend is: DMT course bud DMT

Chances are that if she lobbed off a finger, that she would have been screaming/crying over the phone. So subconsciously you knew she was alright, so the next priority was the knife lol. Not that big a deal I guess. :)

I used my LM Expanse to open some cans. Blade was 154CM and it was still sharp after that. Abit damaged, but who cares? Its not like it cant be fixed.

Ive also used my RC-3 for it, when ive been in the outdoors.

Sorry - don't get the angst. She used the knife as a tool and got the job done. Must of done it competently 'cause she didn't hurt herself.Would guess the number of cans opened this way numbers in the millions - most opened with knives that didn't have a locking blade.
IMHO -knives are utility tools - if you use one for a task and you don't hurt yourself or the knife and get the job done - it's all good.

She didn't have a can opener, so she used a knife instead. I fail to see the problem here. At worst you just need to resharpen a couple of nicks, but the important thing is that knife actually sees some use.

What good is fancy tough blade made of S30V steel if you can't push it to the limit once in a while? Spyderco Native is not that expensive, even if it's totally ruined (I doubt it) you now have a convert, another person who believes that carrying a pocket knife is not weird.

People please. S30V is not glass, it's tougher than most of the premium steels that includes 154CM, 440C, and Even D2. Granted though the Native's Spear Point grind doesn't help it's toughness, but CuttleryLover opened a can using an Entrek Badger made out of 440C. It is metal on metal but it's aluminum, my Charge TTI and Cara Cara have slashed a couple of soda cans making very clean cuts with no problems.

Lighten up folks. Pocket knives were routinely used to open cans when I was a kid, and those were much heavier steel cans. If the can involved was aluminum, I doubt the knife was even significantly dulled.

Giving her a P-38 ain't a bad idea, though. Making a big deal of it is.

Because I said it I think it needs to be proven so bam!

Now I don't want to point out the irony of using a leatherman to open a can using the blade, but I wanted to prove a point about S30V. No signifigant damage, it was burred slightly and the edge did dull, but I sharpened this at 30 degrees inclusive so it's kinda stretching what I wanted it to do. No chips though and that's the important thing.

I bought my wife a native. She broke the tip using it as a screw driver. I broke the tip on my native using it to clear some slag out from under a frame I was fitting up on a crab boat. They have thin weak tips. Good luck.

After months of ownership, finally she calls and says excitedly:

"Hey I used the pink knife to open a can of tuna!!!"

She is referring to the Spyderco Native I bought her. FYI apparently she couldn't find a can opener? How do I respond to this? Anyone know how well S30V holds up against opening canned food? *cringe*

EDIT: this is why she has her own knife, and not one of mine. Someone remind me why I didn't buy her the $5 Big 5 Mtech special?

I opened a can of cherries with my Rat-1 with no problem. obviously it got dulled up big time, but i just resharpened it and its good to go. whats the problem if it was an emergency tuna can opening?

Might be time for a SAK. :)
It sounds like she did a good job, though.

I've heard stories about people opening cans with the blade of a SAK because they didn't realize what that stupid claw thing was for :D.

The can opener on "demo knives" is even explicitly labeled as a can opener for this very reason.

I wonder if a slipjoint is the best choice for someone who might be inclined not to use a knife safely.

Um she used her knife for something other than cutting tape on a package, yes sometimes knives are needed to cut semi hard materials :p

I doubt the blade was damaged unless she did some MAJOR prying and twisting. I used my Tenacious to open a can of chilli recently, that has probably the worst steel for cutting through metal (yes I actually only punctured the lid once, then sliced/sawed most of the way around the top) other than needing a touchup ASAP, it was fine. A few licks on the brown rods, then white, and it was back to shaving.

I can't pinpoint this forum. One minute we're praising knives for passing the most mind numbingly unrealistic, irrational, and stupid spine whack torture tests. The next minute we're shrieking because the blade actually had to cut something that my thumbnail couldn't cut through...

Well its good that you got her a quality knife with a solid lock. I don't even want to think about what might have happened if that "$5 mtech"'s liner lock failed while she was innocently thrusting with every ounce of muscle she had! Good on ya for buying her a good knife. You should see if she digs the SAK though.

When in the army ( 80s) I used a Finish Puukko to go through
hundreds of cans.It seemed that the openers given out with the c rations
would disappear quickly. I also used it to strip wire, cut wire, baton through
2x4s (width wise) with a hammer, pry, screw, etc. Many was the time when it was my only tool. Being a grunt I didn't like the extra weight or signatures for extra equipment.
I still have the knife:) and it shows little sings of falling apart, anyway I believe in hard use of equipment and if it chips, losses a little edge or even
:eek:breaks so what ,that's why most of us carry a back up blade:D
