I just recently finished this seax from a billet I made at Ric Furrer's Shear Madness workshop and am putting it up for sale. Here is a thread that pretty much sums up the whole making of this thing:

http://www.bladeforu...ght=shear+steel

As this is a new genre of bladesmithing for me, I did not attempt a historical recreation. There are a variety of things that probably occurred on these kind of blades during various times in their long history. I wanted the work to be more about the incredible patterning of the shear steel and Masur birch.

It has a 14" blade, 19 3/4" total length. 3/16" spine with distal taper. The shear steel hardened very nicely and a complex hamon spontaneously formed during the quench. But hard to see with all the layering. The wood is Masur birch burl.. native to scandinavia. Guard is antique wrought iron salvaged from the nearby abandoned 'Finn Settlement' an old Finnish homestead in Northern Wisconsin (where I live). The same wrought iron was forged into the ring holders on the scabbard. The scabbard has home brain tanned doeskin as a blade liner.

This is a lovely, unique blade that feels incredible to hold. If I wasn't selling it, I would run off into the woods and start hacking.

I'm asking $700.00. I can take additional pictures upon request and I will allow one week in your possession before returning if unhappy (as long as it's in the same condition that I sent it in). I offer a lifetime guarantee on my work in terms of things related to my craftsman ship or inherent flaws in material. This, however, will not cover inappropriate use.

I'm also seeking a patron to commission work from the remainder of the shear steel that I have from Ric's course. If nobody takes me up soon, I will be forging a belduque. So stay tuned.

I've recently re-worked the handle and pommel. Just adjusted the shape a bit and put on a heavily patinated copper pommel with geometric carvings to match the copper on the scabbard.

This image is distorted from the wide angle lens.. the handle looks a bit crazy... but good detail of new pommel.
