Shear steel mini.....

I have an old I Wilson shear steel butcher knife that I still use for butchering. Have seen pictures of others similar to it, and I found mine in an antique mall for $18. It's in great condition- no worse than most Old Hickory butcher knives the old timers use around here. The edge is paper thin.

I tried to find out how old it is, and IIRC, one source I found said shear steel was pretty much phased out in the early 1750's in Sheffield. It doesn't look like it's that old, but it certainly must be well over a century old.

Raymond,
I am going to ask a silly question, so bear with me. In order to see the pattern, do you etch it? I wonder if old sawmill blades were made with shear steel?

Anthony, Yes it does need to be etched to see the pattern. The shear steel I have was an old sawmill blade but it doesn't mean just because it is old it will be the shear steel. As far as I know there's no real way to tell from the outward apperance weither its shear steel or not.

Thank you! :)

After looking at your gorgeous knives I finally decided to make a search on what was "shear steel" and I got an answer! :D
