Sheath idea....dumb or ?

I had an idea while half asleep on nightshifts last week and thought I'd run it past you all.

I've noticed that many people, like myself, now carry some cordage on their knife sheaths. I wondered if having a notched out section on the sheath would help in securing the cordage.
Any type of cordage could be wound within the notched area such as Bank line, Snare wire, fishing line or even some of each.

This will only work with the Kydex pancake style of sheath. I've done a rough sketch to show what I mean~

What do ya think ?

I think that's a great idea. Sounds like one of those things where you wonder why no one ever thought of that.

Seems like a good idea.. wonder why nobody thought of that before. I usually don't carry cordage on my sheath, but it would be a good idea to keep it secured.

Not dumb at all. I've done it myself on a few. You can even turn the edges inward a bit and use the mouth of the sheath as a clamp for cutting off small pieces without it unraveling.

I've done something similar. Instead of the two wide notches, I used notches that were just slightly smaller than the thickness of paracord. Jam the end of the cord into one notch, then wrap the rest around the sheath. When you get to the end, jam it into the remaining notch. No knots required.

Back in the 1980s the Buckmaster 184 had a sheath that could be wrapped exactly like that between the lashing points.

I liked the original idea a lot, and then I read the above; great idea!

I'm a little slow at the moment.:) Can you elaborate a bit more on this or show a pic!

ok ..... think I get using the mouth as a clamp. Cool!

Some folks just grind out scallops between the rivets too.
I like Scott Free's idea with the notches, kinda like a thread spool.I'm going to put some on my next sheath whenever I get around to actually making one, thanks Scott.
I like your clamp idea too Kiah, and the notches will serve the same purpose.

Instead of two opposing "L"s, think two opposing "J"s. When the cord is pulled upwards or downwards, it catches in the notch to prevent it from slipping over the edge. Basically just cutting out the notch and then using a round file to turn the top and bottom edges inward.
