Sheath ideas for Skeleton Game Warden

I picked up a SGW and it arrived here on Wed. I bought this as an EDC knife. I have been using the leather sheath from my Benchmade Outbounder. It hangs from my belt with the top of the handle at my belt. In PA a fixed blade must be carried open, not concealed, so this sheath does work from that aspect. However, it hangs lower than I would like. Also, it covers too much of the handle. Only 1.5 inches are grabbable above the sheath. The knife has such a thin handle that I want more length available to ensure a good grip.

I am considering a horizontal belt sheath. I am looking at an Armorallleather BADASS. I picture the sheath covering only the blade with the whole handle exposed for grabbing. A retention strap from the backside would go through the handle (between the bones) and snap to the front side of the sheath.

How does this sound? My biggest concern is my coat could cover the sheath in winter time. I do wear a short coat, but it may slip down over the knife sometimes. Any other suggestions??
 
Just in case it influences you decision, I make the badass sheaths with a "cam" on the inside that effectively holds the knife in place, so much so that there is a noticable click when the knife seats in place. The snap strap through the sheath is a nifty idea! :D But a little difficult to use I would figure.

I can see it being a problem trying to keep the knife exposed in the winter. Knife carry here isnt as complicated so I've never thought of how to keep it in sight. I guess if you had a pocket/belt clip on the sheath instead of a loop?

happyhunter, I also have to keep a fixed blade is sight at all times to be within the laws here in PA. Just an idea for you to consider, but I've asked leatherman to make me one with a clip (some sort of ROTATABLE clip would be ideal, would go from day pack to horiz draw & back, in seconds. :D ), so I can carry it on my day pack. easy to reach easy to see.

Here are a couple of pictures with some choices, top is a Okuden kydex sheath with a IWB loop, the others are Armoralleather sheaths, the B.A.D.A.S.S. versions. :eek:

would your sheath cover much of the handle? I would prefer all of the handle to be open to grab. Also, I have wrapped some cord around the handle. Would your sheath be affected by wrapping? Would the cam still retain with or without cord wrap. I can see some days I make take the wrap off for any silly reason. I would like the sheath to work with or without wrap.

I do like the loop on your sheath that allows the sheath to be vert or horz. I think that is great.
 
Dang ducci. How do you get sheaths so fast? I've still got two more months to wait. :confused:

I just got off the phone with Stacy to order a Basass sheath w/ an X-loop for my GW. :)

Later, she's sending me some leather color pics so I can pick their closest offering to a Coyote Brown.

I'm all excited, even after she told me the lead time...

I can make em with just enough room for the talon hole to grab the cam. :)

Its all in the timing, order when its rumored to just about to be announced. I've got FBM orders that have already came up on the list. :eek: Plus, I think he's got some kind of cloning machine, some of those knives just come out of nowhere. :p btw, can you send me an e-mail? I think your closer than you think you are, but I'm not sure of your real name. :o

Yes! Even you can get on the "express", all it takes is the small sum of one piece of INFI! :D ;)
 
That Badass sheath is awfully close to what I was picturing for my Bad Warden. Would it be possible to get a clip that would work with the X loop? (-Just for added flexibility)

Also, is the Bad Warden sheath ambi?

Uh, you did read my post right? :confused: :p

Hint for getting your sheaths as close to when you recieve the knife:::: Order them when you order the knife, not when you recieve the knife. :D For example: RatFink ordered his FBM sheath the day the knives were announced, his order number came up three weeks ago, the day my FBM arrives I will start his sheath.

I could put a clip on one side and a loop on the other, might look a little funky but it would be functional. And no, they're not ambi
