i just finished my first real knife. it is a copy of a knife that was designed for the mercury "astro"nauts. it is 01 tool steel with black linen micarta with bolt on handles and a milled out space for survival items. would it be in bad taste to see if the original knife maker would make a leather sheath with the sharpening stone pocket? i just wouldn't want to offend them, but would like a nice sheath for it. thanks

I don't believe they would be offended. Just tell them that you were inspired by their design and ideas. I'm sure they would be flattered to help you out.

thanks for your input, eric. i just didn't want to offend anybody, or step on anybodys toes. i think i may call them monday morning. will post pics of the knife on my next day off(tuesday)....

You mean the Randall 16 Astro ?

If it is a close copy then i would think you could just ask for a "replacement" sheath for it and it should fit ok.

I wouldn't say anything more than you want a replacement sheath.

If it's not available, or the wait is too long, there are sheath makers who could do that for you.

yeah, its the randall astro. if i remember right, they want you to send the knife to them to fit the sheath to it, since no two are exactly the same.

i learned a lot of skills on this one. using the lathe to turn down the bolts into screws, turning the lanyard tube to size. milling the guard slot. silver brazing the guard, and lanyard tool. playing with the new kmg clone, and the 2x42 crafstman...

Very nice! I, too am working on my first and it is a simple design comparitively. How easily do the bolts unscrew? Maybe a keychain type screwdriver on the lanyard for a more functional surviaval knife?

Nice Work & good photos

You know i always wondered - how useful was the pocket inside the handle if you needed a screwdriver to get to it ?

(oh - and nice watch - i have been wanting one of those for years- something else always seems to get in the way )
