This seems to be a common problem with Kalinga and Akonua sheaths. A missing rivet cap. Are rivets like this a common item that could be ordered and successfully replaced by myself?

Yes, I would think finding the correct size and thickness would harder than replacing. But I would guess they aren't too expensive.

I have used a .22 long rifle case and spread it on the back side. A stock brass rod from your hardware store will work too. Shape a shaft leaving a head. Push it through and peen it with a hammer. Then lightly sand the head. DM

Peening brass rivets is not hard but takes some practice. If you make the rivet too long it is a pain and may never look good. Too short doesn't work. I've peened rivets in wood and metal but never leather. I would cut up an old shoe whose leather is about the same thickness and practice a few times.

I'm a leatherworker, and I love using copper harness rivets for almost anything I'm not stitching. The ones I use are #9 copper rivets and burrs, Tandy brand.

I've never been a fan of the type of rivets in the OP... They're just not very durable in my experience. Personally, if that were my sheath, I'd pop all of those rivets out and replace them completely with harness rivets.

Here's my 124 sheath built with the copper harness rivets.

The issue for me is that the sheaths have high collector value. Interested in an exact match. I guess my question should have asked if these same rivets are 'standard' and easily found.

Heading to Atlanta but will have a look when I get back

dont want to derail the thread, but.............

do the sheath change over the years on buck knives. in this case the kalingas and akonuas? would new or current sheaths be a different design.....other than where it was made country wise and maybe leather dye colored. thanks.

Here is a newer Kalinga sheath from my collection. Sewn, not riveted.

gotcha. so series of years have a certain sheath, until they change the design slightly in fasteners colors country where it made or whatnot. that answers that. thank you Sir.

If you live near a Tandy Leather Store, take your sheath in and see if any of their rivets are a close enough match to suit you. They sell that style rivet in a number of different finishes. From looking at picture there a couple that look like they may match, but I would want to compare side by side to say for sure.

O.B.

Will Buck customer service warranty cover replacing rivets on a sheath? If so, then it is done to spec. Might be worth a call.
