What's the best way to treat the inside of a leather sheath to minimize/eliminate scratches to mirror finishes (besides not putting the blade in the sheath)
There is no way that I know of. The leather has to be smoothed down really well before the sheath is assembled. And then it will most likely still scratch. Thats why I don't do mirror finishes any more.
One of the many reasons to stay away from mirror polished blades....
Go with a good hand rubbed satin for a upscale finish that doesnt show vertical scratches on the insertion and removal from a sheath.
More than likely even if you got the scratches out of the blade ,the very next time you inserted it they would return, you probably have a bit of grime or dirt/abrasive material in the sheath imbedded in the leather. Which is another good reason to use a Take Apart Kydex or consealex sheath which may be disassembled and opened up for cleaning.
Apparently this knife would be a collectors item and not a user. Why put a collectors item in a sheath where it can not be seen? I have made sheaths for many years and know of no way to prevent scratches on a sheathed blade. The first piece of grit that flies by always lands in the sheath and that knowledge you can put in the bank! Kydex and concealex admittedly are easy to clean but will still harbor the grit demon prior to that cleaning and it will do just as much damage as the grit in the leather sheath. Those of you who sheath their blades that are mirror polished will have to accept the fact that they will get scratches.
