I was thinking about using some sort of waterproofing on my Khuk sheath. What I had in mind was mink oil. My question is since it would keep moisture out, would it also hold moisture in and promote rusting? What, if anything, Do you use on your sheath?

Thanks Uncle bill! The search turned up some useful information. I guess that just shows that I am not the first to wonder about this.If anyone has further input I will be happy to have your ideas. Thanks, Brian

Bteel,
How the leather was cured makes all the difference on what the results will be using Mink oil, Neets foot, etc. To avoid problems, not the least is leather stretching and softening of the wood underneath from the oil. I would recomend the use of a hair dryer and SNOW SEAL. It is a wax base, therefore safe with all leathers. Warm the leather then lay on the Snow Seal. Let it stand and then warm with the hair dryer until all wax is soaked up. Repeat until the excess must be wiped off.

I don't know the long term results yet, but Johnson's Paste Floor Wax makes any nice H.I. scabbard shine like. Oops. I can't say that here.

Khukuri FAQ

Thanks guys, Has anyone had A problem with khukuri rusting faster because the waterproofing holds moisture in? What if I don't do anything to the sheath? As you can probably tell this is my first khuk and I am very wary! Brian

Well as long as you don't let you khukri stay in the wet you should be okay. Remember after woking with your kukhri to spend some "quality time" with it. Clean all the remains of whatever you were wacking at off, give it a quick polish, chakma the edge, sharpen if needed. I always give it a nice wipe down with some oil, and thank the khukri for it's work before putting it away for the night.

Side note: This is a really great activity if you are sitting at the campfire! Have fun and enjoy your new knife!

Yvsa found some food grade silicone spray, for like meat cutting equipment, power slicers. etc. He sprays it into the scabbard and lets it absorb into the wood.

A while back I heard that katanas were cared for by wiping with choji or clove oil. Clove oil is sold in pharmacies for toothaches, so I wiped a couple of my khuks down and stuck them in their scabbards. Wonderfull scent when I pulled them out. I later learned that choji oil was a mineral oil with some clove oil added for a scent.

I later found an old bottle of kama sutra oil and applied it to the leather scabbards. Finally I mixed a little clove oil in with the kama sutra and came up with choji sutra oil. For some reason, every time I wipe Hanuman down ( blade, scabbard, and handle ) hia grin seems to get wider.

Rusty, When's that Choji Sutra Oil gonna be available? I'd like to order some for my khuks.

You never know, do you?

My wife felt the clove smell was a little too prevalent and long lasting ( two to three hours afterward ) on this batch. Obviously more field testing is required. VBG

Don't worry, I will eventually publish the recipe. The ingredients so far if you wish to experiment on your own are:

One 6 oz. bottle Kama Sutra "Pleasure Garden" aromatic masage oil.

One 1 oz. bottle 100% essential oil of clove.

Warning - add clove oil with an eyedropper. One quarter of a teaspoon clove oil to 6 ozs. of the KS is a start. Probably shouldn't go more than one-half to three-quarters teaspoon max.

I was out and saw A product called camp dry. I am not sure if this is the same product mentioned earlier. It was an aerosol spray with A silicone base. Would this product soften the leather? Do you reccomend it?

:
The Camp Dry® spray is the same as the one in the jar.
I prefer to rub it in with my hands though and that's why I don't use spray unless neccesary. If I could get the food grade silicone in a form similar I would prefer that as well.

Since then I have found that lexol will also relax leather. Mink oil and neatsfeet oil relax the leather which is not desireable.

Like everyone else I would suggest a wax based treatment like snowseal.

Yes, the knife will rust if left in a wet sheath. Marine tuff cloth seems to be the most lasting rust inhibiting coating. Dry the sheath out the first change you get. Also, a few khukuri users have drilled holes into their sheaths to allow water to drain out.
