Finished a bunch of sheaths, some for special orders and some just for the sheer fun of it... :D

Take a peek:

The sheath for the Chinook was an attempt at a really antique-looking finish, but it came out in some freakish brown color. Not exactly what I had in mind, but nice enough... :)

The website is also coming along nicely, I even put some specials on it...
The Link is Here

Anywho, let me know what you think. More brown? Less white stitching? Just experimenting here... :p

Now those are class acts all the way around! Exception work sir, my hats off to you!

I prefer the white thread against the brown, looks cleaner but some folks don't like the contrast, it's a personal thing I suppose.

Thanks for sharing!!

L Spydie sheaths, Vess.

Especially that Horizontal Millie sheath. :D ;) :D

Beautiful work on all of them Vess, and the Shabaria one is extra pretty cause it's MINE!!! :D :D :D

Is it just me?I like the color of the Chinook sheath.

Spent almost an hour packing the sheaths that will ship tomorrow... :D

And Chinook sheath came out "odd" because of a different finish I used. It's supposed to be antique-looking, but I ended up with a dark brown with a greenish hue. Maybe that's what it's supposed to look like. It's not bad, just different... :) Plus, after another coat I can see color changing again. Very odd...

Now if I can only finish that scarred Native sheath I'll have covered all of my Spydies...

Vess,
That looks like my G HORIZ. Sheath! That will be my SOB sheath for my Live Blade! I now have LH ,RH & SOB!:D Wait till the G group see's these!lol!
Jim

Yes Jim, that horizontal Gunting sheath is one you're about to get... Turned out great. Now every day you'll have to decide which one to wear... ;)

Vess, you know how to make a pocket sheath, so that the knife stays in the pocket without getting a dime or something stuck in the knife?
They all look like beauties for me. I tried to make a sheath (for a Frosts Mora) and that was pretty good. But my attempts at making a pocket sheath was a pretty bad one....

I had someone else ask me about that. I've never even seen one... :O

What do they usually look like, how thick should the leather be, etc. My sheaths so far have been thick and very hard, but I imagine a pocket sheath would have to be nice and thin and soft. I do have some sheepskin and deerskin which is about 1.5 oz and extremely nice and soft, but as to the shape of the thing... ?

Any ideas, pics, etc. :)

Hey guys,I just got the Military sheath in the mail today. It is one FINE piece of work. Thanks Vess

Glad you like the Millie sheath! :)

Can you imagine there's only ONE of these existing right now in the whole wide world? (Yeah, there's one more, but that one is horizontal, so it don't count... :))

Now if I can only get it together to finish that accursed Native sheath. I went out and bought some very coarse natural-colored thread to go with the Native sheath, trying out a new look... :)

I will post pics once it's done... :D

At least for now... :)

There will be one more horizontal G sheath "born" tomorrow, only in black. Actually I get more orders on Gunting sheaths than I do for all other Spydies combined. Come on folks, they can't ALL be THAT comfortable to carry without a sheath! :) Just kidding... :p

In a few years that would be like saying I have the first Military sheath that Mike Sastre made. You will really be big one day if you keep it up.This is as nice of a leather sheath as I have ever seen.
I think you would really do good if you make up a bunch and take them to a big knife show and sell them.BTW sign your name to the back of them somehow.

Vess,

There's a kydex pocket sheath at:

http://www.hideawayknife.com/sheaths.php

Interesting idea, the sheath is "waved" like an Emerson knife.

That waved sheath is a nifty idea. Really nifty... :) Dunno if it would work for a folder, and if the leather is stiff enough to pull that off, but definitely worth exploring. Thanks for the info! :)

I also took a look at the leathe sheaths. It's funny how we all end up with exactly the same basic stamps for tooling the leather. That basketweave was one of my first stamps, used it on bowie sheaths all the time... :D

FWIW for product ideas, I'd love a thin leather, "waved" pocket sheath for both the Gunting and the Ronin. I don't currently own a Gunting primarily because I'm not happy with my carry options for it. I'm growing fond of carrying small fixed blades in my pocket with the sheath attached to a "static cord".

Just wrote a beautiful, long, insightful reply to your post WWill, but I guess I was typing too long because when I tried to submit the reply I had to re-login and the reply was lost... That'll teach me to be brief... :P

Anywho, what I said in a nutshell was that for Ronin a waved leather sheath should work great. I don't have a Ronin, so I can't try it out, but it should work. I do have a Perrin fixed-blade, so one of these days I may try for a waved pocket sheath for it. It "should" still be legal to carry around here if the handle sticks out from the pocket far enough, so it won't be concealed...

As for the Gunting, pocket sheaths for that beast just don't seem to work. The horn on the blade will take up all of your pocket space, and tear up the insides with its sharp edges. And the handle has so many little horns and crevices that it won't let go of the sheath fast enough, and will probably pull your pants off in the process... :D

Now, making a pocket sheath where the Gunting is upside-down and opens kinetically during the draw is a possibility, I guess, but the damage to the pocket from the horn and repeated draws will be catastrophic... :) Even thick jeans will wear down pretty fast.

I guess pocket sheaths for the non-quick-draw knives will be okay, but you'd still need two hands to get it out. But for fixed blades it should work just fine... :)

Edit: Can't believe I typed "knifes"...

vess: i couldn't find a photo of one, but it's like a pocket sheath for a firearm. It's designed so that the sheath stays in the pocket when the item is drawn, and the sheath prevents coins and keys get into the nook and cranny of the item in the sheath....
