is it possible for you to make a sheath with just the blade outline?

this was on an other thread but I did not see a reply, so I figured I would ask.

I think this would depend on the blade type -- staight blade with same thickness entire length would not be so bad. A khukuri would be another ball game but I'll let Terry answer this for himself.

Mott,
I have to have the khukuri to make a sheath. You have to fit the wood core to the blade. To loose and it will flop around in the sheath, to tight and you won't get the khukuri in.
Hope this helps.
God Bless.
Terry

Of course the kamis can work from a wood model, so why shouldn't Terry be able to do the same? ;) :D :p

Jest TZN Terry.:D

That should work and it's a serious consideration, too. I'm sure there's a few old ivory handled jobs around that the owner might not want to subject to the possibility of loss while in transit to and from Claremore. Send a wood replica.

It may be more of a hassle, but the way Terry makes scabbards he could make the wood core to fit the model and then send the wood core to the person who ordered it so they could try the real knife in the uncovered scabbard.
If it fit like it should then it could be sent back to Terry for final finish and covering. If not then it could be tweaked by Terry with feed back from the customer.
Like I said, "more of a hassle," but well worth it in the case of an ivory handled or other precious antique khukuri that someone wasn't willing to trust the different courier sevices to get it there and in one piece.:)

Terry can also do Ivory handles if the customer will furnish legal ivory. Actually Terry can put about any material going on as a handle if it can be obtained in suitable size.
I think one made with the ivory colored micarta would be a sight to behold, that material even accepts scrim work.:D
I have to back up a little bit. Terry isn't set up to do semi-precious stone handles yet, doesn't have the lapidary equipement.;)

Does the same apply to the Quick-Draw style? Are they leather only (no wood core)?

It is no problem at all to send Ivory handled or really old khukuris to me for work. You have to package them really well(alot of padding and a good heavy cardboard box) and INSURE THEM!!!!
We watch the mail like hawks when we are expecting a package.
The wood model would work but the model would have to be a exact replica. It's easier to send the khukuri. Plus I get to handle all those old and Ivory handled khukuris!!!!:D
T-Bone

Terry or T-Bone no longer says such things as, "Aw Shucks, you guys are gonna give me the big head." or "Aw I ain't all that good.":p;):D

Actually T-Bone deserves all the praise heaped on him as he is truly an American Sarki and the best as well. Of course he's also the only one that makes khukuri scabbards I do believe.:p;):)

Terry is a good deal like me in that he is not one to blow his own horn. He lets satified cutomers to that. Word gets around.

Terry is unique in this culture, and should be appreciated as the national treasure he is. Not sure which of two possible nations.:)

Terry also is one of the few of us who has put a very nasty gash in his leg with a falling khukuri.
This takes the hat size down a notch. But on the other hand, Terry had the personal honesty to let this info go public for the benefit of those who tend to get a little careless with their blades so maybe the hat size remains as is.

I was wondering if Terry ever tried making a scabbard with a kydex core. I've seen other threads about kydex sheaths, and people seem to disfavor them. (I cannot recall the reasons(s) right now). It seems to me that one of the problems with carrying a large khuk day to day might be the bulkiness of the traditional sheaths. Is there an alternative to this bulkikess? Say, make a regular leather sheath with no karda and chamka (sp?). Or is this sacrilege? Is there a reason why a simple leather sheath would not do? Perhaps one could make a simple leather sheath with just a kydex bar that would run the length of the sharpened edge of the blade so as to ensure that when the blade gets drawn it doesn't slice through the sheath. Just some thoughts.

One of my "projects" is trying to skull up an IWB sheath for a 14" Jag & Prem Sirupati. This is an excellent blade for general carry, but a bit too long for concealment. A Kydex liner, or some other cut resistant material, is highly desireable (saves unsightly slices in your BVDs) but most I've found are not "blade friendly", as to scratches, etc. A synthetic filler, sewn into the blade edge seam of the sheath would be ideal, but I'm stumped on finding anything that will work - Any ideas???

Wal,

Chris Hatin (www.hatintec.com) and Ivan Campos,(who visits here regularly) both use a synthetic lining inside the kydex sheath. I know Chris does, and I'm pretty sure about Ivan.

I think it's some kind of adhesive backed velour/moleskin-like material. I don't know who makes it, but if you contact either one of them, they may be willing to tell you what the product is as long as you don't compete with their sales. ;)
