Ok, what's the deal with Busse knives not coming with at least a usable sheath (I realize a great sheath would up the cost quite a bit).

Just seems quite a ballbuster to get the new steel in and then have to ship it right back out for pants.

Now you can choose your own sheathmaker and style you like:thumbup:

I sort of agree, but opinions vary. I think they used to.

Thing is, a lot of folks buy them to collect and a sheath isn't necessary. Plus, what sheath to offer? A really fancy one for the collectors, a kydex one, leather (dropleg, highride, inside waistband), nylon, etc etc.

I imagine it could get complicated having to offer a range of sheaths to satisfy everyone, so they don't.

The BCS does offer a few.

Personally I would pay a few extra bucks for a basic spec-ops type sheath, supplied with and made to fit the knives, but that's just me.

I suppose it really helps out a lot of leather workers and kydex benders earn a living and many of them produce truly excellent work at quite reasonable prices. The main irritation there is getting the knife, then having to wait for a suitable sheath.

just my 2p.

Order your sheath at the same time you order the knife.

I like being able to choose my own sheath and maker, makes the knife even more original!!

The Busses and Swamp Rats I got that came in the provided sheaths are mostly still being used with those sheaths. I sure have gotten some cool sheaths for the later blades since then and beside having to wait a while I'm happy getting something different for each blade.

Custom or Busse I would rather not pay for the added price of a sheath from the maker unless they will make me up exactly what I want. I would rather get made up exactly what I want from a sheath maker.

Although I am a huge fan of many of the custom sheathmakers here, I have always been disappointed in no (usable) sheath coming with a Busse. I have read all the responses and seen all the arguments for this, but it really holds no water with me since many, many, many custom and production makers provide them at very little to no extra cost. I am pleased that Grandsuave and Skunk have gone the furthest to insure that we can get a serviceable sheath with our purchase. That being said, the kydex sheaths that they provide are amongst my favorite. But, if I am buying a Busse, I will usually make sure to get a Spec-Ops brand sheath that will serve until I decide on something else. After that point, the world is wide open as far as options. We have some incredible talent available, and most of them have a rather prompt turnaround.

I agree on both fronts.

It would be nice if Busse's came with a sheath if only to have a "user" sheath right out of the box. Busse would be ordering sheaths in volume and therefore be able to get better pricing. Then, as with any blade you purchase, with or without sheath, you can buy another, and another. I have several sheaths for my users.

On the other hand, it is fun as hell customizing a sheath and when it arrives it is like Christmas. Plus there are some folks who do have a relatively fast turn around time. Most makers have the non-custom shop knives on hand so you do not even have to send the knife in.

Either way... order some custom sheaths

One consideration also is that many hogs buy a bunch of the same knife. If you bought 27 skelly wardens, would you want 27 sheaths? or if you bought 15 new NMFBM's would you want the all the extra sheaths. The Busse Company store has a good idea to have ready made sheaths to add to the order if those are the ones you want.

For me, it's no big deal.

Jerry is in the knife business, not the sheath business. There are plenty of options for top notch sheath makers.

If you buy a high-end 1911, do you expect it to come with a holster??

It is not typical with a 1911, but it is with knives. High end or not.
Nevertheless, Jerry is anything but typical, but he is in the minority as a knifemaker using a super steel ,and not supplying a sheath. It is a trade off for many of us, but obviously a trade off we are willing to participate in.

I was thinking something like what Ontario ships with their RAT knives. A cheap nylon sheath (not cordura), has a belt loop, has PALS webbing and a MOLLE strap with a pouch in front you can put a diafold or firestarter in. Probably costs them $3, doesn't add to the cost of the knife. That way you at least have something to use until you decide on a custom.

Nothing wrong with Spec-Ops sheaths except they don't make them in Battle Mistress sizes.

I understand not wanting to ship a high end sheath with it, as some would want kydex, some leather -- real PIA. This way, if you bought a bunch of the same blade, no big deal if you throw out the cheap sheath or chuck it in a box in the basement.

Oh, and I don't know about your local dealers, but my gun pusher will throw in a cheap nylon or suede holster with a gun, high-end or low-end.

Lots of good points being made here on both sides of the issue. On the one hand, it is rather unheard of in this industry to pay $300 to $600 for a production fixed blade knife, and not have at least a basic sheath included in the price. On the other hand, no matter how expensive a knife might be, I'd just as soon not have to pay an extra $40 for a sheath I might never use.

As a compromise, I'd love it if Busse Combat made a sample of each new blade style available to one leather, one kydex, and one kydex lined cordura nylon sheath maker. In this way their customers could order a sheath of their liking without having to go through the major pain in the ass of packaging up and shipping out their brand new knife, thus being deprived of their prized purchase for possibly weeks.

I love making and buying custom sheaths as there is a lot of talent out there but something like a spec ops sheath that came gratis would be pretty cool, as long as the knife had never been in said sheath. I like the blades pristine for a while at least

This is always going to be an issue with Busses.

Jerry has supplied sheaths with knives in the past but from my observations, everyone always replaces them with another type of sheath. Even when he's offered a low budget option to get folks by on they get tossed eventually. I am just as guilty but I am much happier with the aftermarket sheaths.

How many guns come with the right holster or sling that suits your needs or taste? It's a very personal thing.

suppose im just used to it now. that is, having to order a custom sheath for each knife.

but i waited quite some time before buying my first busse because they did not come with a sheath.

ironically, now i wouldn't want it any other way. unless it was leatherman supplying the stock sheaths, i prefer to order exactly what i want and will use from him and stacy.

I personally never did like the sheaths that used to come with the Busse family of knives. I always wanted something a little more or better so I was "stuck" with a sheath I basically paid for and did not want. I can see that everybody is not in the same camp as me so maybe they could bring back the basic black sheath as an option?
