Sheeple friendliness

I agree with your point of view, but we are fighting years of "bad press" and getting sheeple become used to others having knives may take time and a little art.

We are simply going backwards in this area. It's not a matter of introducing. It is a matter of slowing the degradation of our individual rights. There was a time when the norm was to have a knife in your pocket, and now we are tiptoeing around and making special provisions just to ease the fears of the people around us. In some urban areas, we are afraid that we can't even pull out our knife. Restricitions abound where they weren't even heard of years ago. How bad is it going to get in another ten or twenty years as knife advocates become more and more sheeple friendly so as to respect and not make waves. Two inch slippies will be the standard issue and everything else will be restricted to the confines of your property line.

...Personally, i'm respectful about my environment and wouldn't whip out a SOG Seal Pup in church...

I had daycare duty and this little girl got here frirly lace sock wrapped up in this bicycle merry go round thing. It had her ankle pinned to the peddle. At the time, my "sheeple friendly" knife was my black Native due to the fact that it was shorter than my Endura. At first I was reluctant, but I pulled it out and cut the sock away while another kids mom held her leg still. She stood in there steady even after I lightly poked her in the back of the hand. That was the first "rescue" I had, and I had only just recently began leaving my knife in my pocket when I got to church.

Perhaps.........if we spent less time talking about "whipping them out", "tactical", etc., and referring to our fellow society members as "sheeple"........'spose it might help with public opinion??
I've been carrying, and using, a "pocket knife" for 40 years plus, and have never had a negative comment or problem with it, but I treat it like a tool, respect myself & others, and I don't act like a mall ninja...i.e.- "play" with it in public.

I'm not saying not to use your knife around sheeple. The more sheeple see us using our knives, in a reasonable way, they will be less likely to press for legislation against knives. Maybe.

However, I know some guys get a kick out shocking people by flicking their knife open. I think it is dumb to scare some people who might be likely to call for greater restrictions on knives.

I'm all for calling and writing our political office holders about bad knife laws. I'm also for voting for people who support our point of view.

Personally, I don't give a rats ass about political correctness, and I call 'em as I see 'em. If someone is going to act like a sheeple, I'll call them a sheeple. I'm not racist, but if someone is driving around in a beat up pickup with a lawnmower in the back, an "In loving memory of..." sticker on the back window, a "97.9 La Raza" sticker on the bumper, with the windows down blasting mariachi music, they're a beaner. Beaners are not necessarily mexican, they just comply to the above standards. Guys in lifted trucks with baggy clothes and Dumont Dunes or Glamis stickers are Bros, guys who cut me off on the freeway are assholes, Cars with jesus fish on the back are christmobiles, microbuses with a bunch of anti gov't stickers and "meat is murder" probably have hippies inside, cars with KMK stickers tend to be driven by stoners, people who look down on me because I'm younger than them are dumbasses.

I fall into several of the above categories, and I don't get mad if someone calls me any of those terms, I don't care if I get cracker, white trash, KKK man, or faggot (I have highlights). They're calling it as they see it, and sometimes they're right (I can be an asshole), and sometimes they're wrong (I am not in the kkk)

If someone doesn't like being called a sheeple, they should stop acting like sheep. If I wanted to stop getting random gay jokes made, I'd take out my highlights and wear looser fitting clothing (I'm not gay, I just work out and like to show it).

I'm not sure if you're trying to sneak some racist propaganda by us or if you've just had too much drink tonight, which is why you're only getting a warning this time. Post sober!

... and presentation has a lot to do with it. Wuff

I agree, I think presentation has a lot to do with it. I think it had a whole lot to do with it hundreds of years ago with our Viking and Celtic warrior ancestors...they pulled a blade out very carefully in front of other people :D

I'm 65 and I got my first knife from my father 60 years ago, in the day when every man carried a pocketknife daily, and a hunting knife when they went hunting. Getting your first knife was a rite of passage. But honestly, they didn't go on about knives the way we do here in BF.

I think us knife lovers are an individual breed, not everybody shares our enthusiasm. I really don't think the situation was much different 60 years ago. I was always playing with knives when I was a kid and one day my uncle looked at me curiously, with some apprehension, and said "You really like knives don't you?"

I said "Yeah?!" (what's your point?) :)

(later they found out I really liked guns too :D)

When I was in the third grade, I was sitting in class one day playing with my new pocketknife when I should have been looking at the blackboard. The teacher caught me and took my knife away and said I could have it back at the end of the day. Well I got laughed at and I was practically in tears all day long about the loss of my precious knife. At the end of the day she gave it back to me and told me "Next time, keep it in your pocket!"

This same teacher had the experience of another kid opening a pocket knife and threatening her with it. Looking back, I'm surprised at the patience she had with me...I like to think she could read the difference...or she was tough enough not to be intimidated by third grade punks. Ah the good ol' days :)

I've got a SAK and an Opinel on me daily, wherever I go, and when I go in the woods I've got a fixed blade. But If I'm going into the county courthouse, I leave it all in my car. Just common sense.

Sheeple Unfriendly:
Black or camo blade coatings
Any assisted opening knife
Tanto or other blade shapes besides the standard clip or drop points (utility blades)
Serrations
Large or oddly shaped handles
Blades in an office environment over 2.5" or 3"

very true. but with an exception. my plain ole CRKT M16-12 causes no fuss in my office. my female general manager uses it and refers to it as a bunny knife when she comes to my defense for having a knife in the workplace ( i am a systems administrator) but my CRKT M60-14NK with drop holster and BLACK, TANTO, SERRATED, FIXED blade.i am not game enough to even just have that on my desk at work. for fear of someone flipping out and me getting the sack.

:thumbup:I'm quoting the whole thing because I think its an incredibly wise statement. Us "knife knuts" are on the lunatic fringe of this industry/hobby. This is not a bad thing as long as we aren't irresposible about it, but we should be aware that even among other knife users many of us are still in the minority. I wonder how many knife buyers/users ALSO fall into the category that many of us do here...spending a small fortune on sharp pieces of steel:D

agreed. the whole 'sheeple' designation can be seen as condescending, imho.

I agree! I have been carrying a knife for 34 years now, and have NEVER had a problem!

I also follow the law. I live in MA., and Boston has a 2.5 max blade limit, and I follow it. I have some great small knives that I can carry legally in Boston.

I'm sure that if I whipped out my Military or waved open the P'kal instead of opening it sanely in front of people they'd get worried. Hell, I LOVE knives, and if some dip whips their knife out like super-ninja I'm keeping an eye on them till the knife is put away. Not scared, but prepared.
If that same guy pulled his knife out like a normal human and used it for normal human knifely duties I wouldn't take as much notice.
It's usually the person rather than the knife which freaks people out.
