Just my observations about how many idiots there are in the world -

I work for my States Goverment (Michigan) in a 15 story office building in Detroit. The building I work in has an office for virtually every department within State government. We have the treasury office, State police post, Attorney Generals office, Appelate Court, Commercial Enforcement Division, Corrections, etc....There are alot of people walking around that might have a problem with 1 or more of the above listed departments. This past Thursday our emergency alert alarm went off. This alarm means that everyone is supposed to evacuate the building. The alarm goes off semi-frequently (probably once every 3-4 months) and they are always false alarms. So anyway, the alarm goes off and I grab my bag and make my way outside, just as I do every single time the alarm goes off, and there are approximately 15 to 20 other State employees outside. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT, A WHOLE 15 OR 20 OUT OF MORE THAN 1,000 MANAGED TO PRY THEIR BUTTS OUT OF THEIR CHAIRS AND GO OUTSIDE!!!!. It was a false alarm and they called the all clear, just as they always do, and I went back to my office. The next time the alarm goes off I will grab my bag and make my way outside, just as I always do, hoping that it is once again a false alarm but never becoming so complacent that I become one of the 1,000+ plus sheeple that remain at their desks saying "ahhhhh, its just a false alarm".

My wife works for a state agency. In response to the recent shootings in colleges and such (none of which have taken place in her state) They're going to shortly institute a "no weapons" policy.

That'll save 'em.

Idiots abound.

That mentality always blows me away. As someone thas has been allowed to carry a gun for most of my adult life and have dealt with NUMEROUS people that have no business carrying a gun, I would never tell a law abiding citizen that they have no right, or more correctly, no ability to protect themselves. The average response time for the P.D I used to work for was a little over 5 minutes which is actually very good. There are alot of people that don't realize what can happen in 5 minutes.

Idiots abound.

Robert nailed it.

I grew up in Detroit and still live in a suburb of that hole. Unfortunately I know the type all to well. Fortunately I work for a company that stresses safety above all. It's a shame that so many act as you described. The only good thing that could come out of an actual emergency/disaster is that gene pool would get a cleansing on a Darwinian level.

Good on ya for taking matters seriously.

Chris

I used to work in a building that had a major oil company downstairs and they got regular bomb threats. Every time this happened, the whole building evacuated. As we would hit the big reinforced stairwells 11 flights up, we would see people lined up waiting for the elevators.

Actually, the BIG advantage to leaving quickly was getting across the street to the coffee shop to wait out the false alarm in comfort. :)

Screw em, let em find out what happens when they ignore an Emergency Alarm. One day they will find themselves in a flame filled room, gasping for air, or bleeding as their bodies are flayed with flying glass, the whole time a single thought will ironically going thru their brains before they die "why did'nt i leave the building.....?"

I dont mean to sound indifferent or insensitive.......but seriously......let them find out on their own....Murphys a real *****

< Bushy, has ZERO respect for sheeple.

If the alarm goes off so frequently, and they are always false alarms, does it seriously surprise anyone that so few pay attention? Realistically, why do you even pay attention?

It's just like those stupid car alarms. When was the last time you heard a car alarm go off and bothered to call the cops?

Not to be disrespectful, but it could be argued that the real sheeple here is the one who follows a command every time, despite the command being wrong every time.

shecky, threat analysis has to account for more factors than likelihood alone. As the original poster pointed out, the broad spectrum of state agencies and consequent variety of visitors adds another factor: the seriousness of the result if one of those alarms is for real.

Ignoring a car alarm could lead to theft. Ignoring an intruder alarm could lead to death.

I had a job for a while installing fire alarms and emergency warning systems , on slack days I would have to drive around testing systems ... I was kinda familiar with fire alarm bells and stuff

a few weeks after I quit it , I was with my now late father in the doctors surgery , waiting to see the GP ,when they had their first ever fire drill , only I didnt know it was a drill , I heard the fire alarm go off , the office girls were debating "was that the fire bell ? I dunno what does the firebell sound like ? No-one is running around , so it cant be anything important .."

I got up and feeling like a complete dork announced to everyone in the room "People , listen up , that is the fire alarm you hear , it could be a drill , it could be the real thing , we need to get out whatever it is .

no response , only my father got up , I repeated myself , still nothing but blank looks , so I gave up and we walked out , to find a handful of patients and staff standing at the assembly point outside .

I had a serious talk to the doctor we had come to see , he happened to be there with some folk he had brung out , but he was worried about the lack of participation in their drill ... I told him that his office girls were still discussing what the bell is ringing for , and suggested relocating the assmebly point away from the building and the LPG tank it was then near ...

I dunno if anything ever changed or if the gave up on the idea of having fire drills even ...

people are not the smartest at times , but here , I think there is a huge "It cant happen here" factor to it

This false sense of well being and ever alarm is just paranoia can hapen in places where it can get someone hurt or dead.
A few years ago there was a incident in Texas of 7 inmates escaping fron prison and then moving north they robed a Oshmans store killed a cop and there was a massive manhunt.
The inmates had taken their civilian supervisors and tyed them in a storerom where one of the supervisors managed to turn on the fire alarm and in the control pickett where it was reported to a security supervisor he said oh it is just a false alarm.

If listening to an alarm that tells me to evacuate a building that was triggered by someone that has information that I don't makes me a sheeple, then so be it.

Complacency kills people all the time. How many cops do you think are killed during "routine" traffic stops?

The worst part about these idiots refusing to leave is that someone else will have to put their life at risk to go rescue those idiots.

Maybe instead of taking the stairs their evacuation plan should be running up to the roof and jumping off. :)

The only problem with this line of thinking is that it would place rescue workers in harms way to go get the idiots (and you know they would). If they could be left alone to die or make their way out, then your theory would be most appropriate.

I'm reminded of the workers who made their way to the ground floor of the WTC during the early stages of the 9/11 attacks, then decided to return to their offices.

No matter where you are at, a club, clinic, hotel, theater...take note of the exits. The masses are going to leave the same way they come in . Dont get caught in a bottleneck like those poor souls at that Great White concert.

I could not agree more.

Most people have no clue where an alternate exit is let alone the actual emergency exit. My wife used to laugh at me because when we are a hotel, etc. that I would make a point to make sure she knows where to go in an emergency.

I say "used to" because now is of the same mindset as me. Thank God.

I love the "it won't happen to me" attitude. :barf:

bwilson - its not your problem. Your problem is to evacuate the building and move several blocks away. Don't stand around the entrance and smoke cigarettes, eyeball the women and jaw-jack. Move away from the building.

The lack of response by others works for you. The stairwells are not going to be crowded which allows you to 'fly' down the stairs to safety.

Don't go around trying to save the world. It can't be done. Save yourself and get home to your family.

I got thinking about it and remembered an incident that I was involved in back in the seventies. I was at a business dinner on the fifth or sixth floor of a building in Washington DC when the fire alarm went off. The order came to evacuate the building and there was actually light smoke in the stairwell. Everyone got out in a safe and orderly fashion, most people even brought their cocktails along. After a while, people's drinks started going dry, and several people actually reentered the building to get another drink! The fire fighters put an end to that, but it was a pretty amazing sight to see.
