Sheepsfoot vs Wharncliffe?

I see you got the 25 Little Jack off the exchange! You got a great deal on that little knife too I just bought he exact same one last week to go along with my Ebony version. I think you will love it I know I sure am partial to mine. :) Congrats and make sure to let us know what you think once it makes its way to you.

Yep, I got it because of a suggestion here as well, I cant wait to try it out.

Everyone has been soooo helpful! You guys rock!

Personally I prefer a modified sheepsfoot like on the SAK electrician. If you can find something like that but without the little round cuttout I think it'll be best for you. You get a little bit of belly but still have the tip power that you're looking for. I find that the little bit of belly presents the tip a little better to the material being cut. YMMV.

what's the point of modifying the sheepsfoot when it turns out looking like a wharncliffe? you might as well save yourself some time and just go out and buy the wharncliffe.

If he's talking about a blade with a bit of "belly", a Wharncliffe would also have to be modified.

Here are a few that I use The mini copperhead occasionally, the skinny whittler never, the Petty on the bottom every day, the second from the top is an old Swan that I used to use often but it lost in favour of the Petty. The Charlie sheepsfoot I bought to use but can't bring myself to do it. Some of the prettiest bone I've ever seen. Just added a capture from Northwoods of their new GEC made Norfolk Which is in the mail.:D At 3 1/4 inches this knife should be a little gem.IMO

Best regards

Robin

Thanks Pipeman, beautiful knives! I've looked at the mini copperhead and the norfolk and they both look nice although i'm partial to the price on the copperhead. I am partial to single blades because I already carry a clip or spear blade in the other pocket. That barlow is really nice, i'm sure I will pick one up. I just picked up a GEC 25 off the exchange and cant wait to try it. I feel that the GEC 25 is not the end of the road but the beginning.....:)

I feel that it might kick other blade shapes out of my pocket...

Just had a thought.......

Do we need a Sheepsfoot Peanut/Pemberton type knife?

I'm on a mission (well the beginning of a mission) to try and get a Pemberton/peanut sized knife with punch as next years Traditional Forum knife. While I like the idea of a sheepsfoot, it is on this years, so I might have to try and sway you to the wharncliffe side! But I do agree that we need a small straight bladed slipjoint, I just hope that people can be convinced of the utility of a punch on a small knife. An upgraded model of this little guy if you will:

Although I guess sheepnut beats out Pembercliffe or Wharnnut, so you might be on to something!!;)

As for the OP. If you are an over sharpener, then I would recommend the sheepsfoot.

Sorry, but a Sheepnut is too good a name to pass up. :p

I pulled this in from the boys' knife thread.
The single blade EO Sheepsfoot will do everything you want (except cleaning your nails) and is a very light and handy package. Also available with the pen secondary if your nails are habitually dirty. :) The sheepsfoot is a highly underated blade style IMHO; it is unsurpassed for opening boxes, mail, and sharpening your pencil... and has a much stronger point than a wharncliffe blade. (take it from someone who has broken the tip...)

I copied it here mostly because I agree with it (but also because it made me grin). I prefer a sheepsfoot instead of a Wharncliffe because the short stout blade and stronger tip is more useful for the chores I do with a knife.

My 25 rust red jig with sheepsfoot blade arrived and I LOVE it. It seems to be as useful as I thought it would be. Now, I have to get a boys knife with sheepsfoot blade to be a main carry... The 25 is a little utility master and pairs well with a 73. With those two knives I can do anything....

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas, with all the thought provoking posts, I decided to order a 48 trapper with wharncliffe secondary. I'm really liking the straight edge blade. I find that a sheepsfoot is more useful for my usage. I'll give the wharncliffe a run and decide the champion!

Good I'm glad you like it! They are a great little knife. So far I haven't felt like my Boys Knife can do anymore or less than my little 25 can do and surprisingly they are the same weight at 1.9 ounces on my scale. I just snapped these pictures a few minutes ago as I happen to have them both here at work with me but my camera sucks and i can't get the lighting right so sorry for the bad pics but here you go. :)

Great pictures, I think it shows the color of the bone well. The boys knife is just such an attractive frame. I am definitely going to pick up a 15 sheepsfoot, now I just have to decide on handle material... I also dig the shield.
