I get it from my local steel supply company and I buy it for probably about the same cost that McMaster does before they mark it up.
When I lived in Raleigh it was Dillon. In Georgia it was Oneal. Now I buy from SRI and Ryerson.
Look for your local steel supplier. What they don't have in stock, they can order.
They can't get CPM stuff and fancy stainless (does anyone know where to get VG10?), but your more popular stuff like D2, 1095, 5160, W1 etc are good candidates.
Actually, 1095 is the only alloy I've seen in full sheet, but I have seen stuff like D2, A2 P20 H13, S7 in wide strip and I'm pretty sure they can be ordered in large plate. I'm also pretty sure you can order the CPM stuff in large sheet from their service centers and I think that Admiral has 1095 and 5160 in plate and sheet as well as a lot of other stuff in large forms.
If I was wanting something like this, I'd first talk to my local steel suppliers. They can get a lot of good stuff.
