Sheffield knife- what did I get?

Thanks for all the support. I'm not crazy, or a chump. (at least regarding this issue;) )
Here's an update. When I originally ordered the knife, I spoke to the dealer on the phone, and he said that he had three in stock, so I asked him to pick the best one. :) Obviously we have different ideas about what is 'best'
I emailed him the pictures I took tonight, and just spoke to him again. He told me to send it back. He also said he'd take pictures of the other two in stock ( both sides w/ tang stamps visible) and email those. I can think it over this weekend and decide if I want to exchange for one of those or a refund.

The one on the bottom doesn't look too bad, but but I'm a little wary. What does everyone think?

I put the three pics he sent into this collage

Was there a box? Or other packaging? Like some others I am thinking this is not the "Wright" knife you ordered

Sorry I tried but couldn't resist.

Unmarked box. Something is definitely not 'Wright' :D

Both knives appear to at least come from the correct company and while not the awesome stag of the original photo both look good to me. At this point I would say do whatever you want and if it's going to leave a bad taste in your mouth take the refund, if you still want the knife get the replacement.

That's standard, but I also don't think you were sent an Arthur Wright knife r8shell. The other knives look OK to me, but if you decide to reorder, I hope that this dealer is paying your postage.

If you're dead set on getting one of them, I'd go with the bottom one.

Those pics look much more like the Rosewood one I got. The Tang stamp looks like mine too.
I won't comment on the stag because mine is Rosewood and i do not particularly like stag myself ;)

If those are real pics of the ones he has in stock I'd say go for it. But as Jack said:

I wondered about that thanks. Helps to explain but not excuse sending out the wrong knife.

The top one looks like it has too much variation in thickness - though nothing like mine! I don't mind a polished stag with less 'popcorn', so I'm leaning toward the bottom one. Of course that's assuming these are accurate pics, so I'm waffling.

I'll be talking to him on Monday, and we'll see.

I've just been into York, and called into a hardware store there that stocks Wright knives. They didn't have any in in stag, but I did notice a couple out of the 20 or 30 knives they had on display had the same 'Made in Sheffield' tang stamp. Not sure what the story is there, maybe one of Wright's outworkers, who knows, not very good though.

I don't think you can really get a true impression of what those knives are like by those pic's. One thing I like about US GEC dealers is that they are prepared to take the time to photograph the knives properly, often from all sides and with a zoom option. Great.

If you are still keen I'd ask for closer up pic's of the one you want, both sides and top and bottom. that's the least he can do!

Very sorry you've not had better service r8shell. Whoever you bought this from is a disgrace (I hope you'll name and shame them elsewhere). I despair at the morons running what's left of the Sheffield cutlery industry, they couldn't sell water in the middle of the Sahara :(

I'm embarrassed by our, once proud Sheffield knife industry. Unfortunately I think it has reached a point where I would recommend only purchasing one that you have had in your hand to look over:(

My fellow Brits have really summed how I feel about these. Although I am very upset that you should receive such an abysmal looking specimen, it does not surprise me. I'd have to recommend not wasting your money taking a second shot in all honesty. I think the other two should likely be just as bad up close.

It's really common to see these ludicrously bulky stag handles. Somehow the manufacturer must presume that in order to preserve what little 'interest' and pattern the stag had they need to make the slabs soooooo thick. Poorly selected and cheap deer horns no doubt. Make me really angry to see.....grrrrr.

I also hate the way the blades on Sheffield knives are often not in-line with the handle, and somehow kinked forward, like they don't give a monkeys about the way the blade meets the spring.....grrrr.

Workmanship is less than 'utilitarian' it's actually just crap.

I agree with Mr Scruff and that is why I buy my knives in the States. I would like to buy British but money takes too much earning to waste on junk like that.

That is very disappointing. I have a few older A Wright and Sons and they are decent albeit not exceptional quality IMO.

I Ordered an A.Wright & Son's Lambfoot, and it came in today. I don't think I've ever had a knife look less like its picture.

That A.Wright makers mark looks way off to me

all the knives i've seen have

A,Wright
Sheffield
England

as the makers mark - I'd send it back for a full refund and if its come from the UK I'd also ask for the return postage - we have distance selling laws that cover such refunds...

Fantastic help Jack,
R8 - that's a bum deal, I am sorry you have experienced this, in my own opinion that knife is returnable - its completely different-tans stamping, Stag ( ? ) - the tip - just not good return the knife Sir! - along with a knowledgeable description of what you received compared to what you saw-and your expectations on receiving another-if they cannot fulfil your rightful demands-a refund.
Please let us know how you got on.

What a week I'm having.
I'm just going to return it for refund. (Since the water heater chose this weekend to die, I need the money more than I need a new knife)
I haven't given up on Wright & Sons, (especially considering it's doubtful this one was even made by them) but I'll give it a rest for a while, and be on the look out for a better example in the future.

Abysmal. That nail nick is ludicrous compared to the blade size, obese slabs of rough quality porous antler. Looks like a raised spring on open, and the tip of that blade???

Good you sent that back as it has no place in a knife collection. I've written this before, but my own experiences of Wright knives led me to think of them as Wrong all over. Bought a Lambfoot in Horn some years back, it was hopeless. Sent it back at some extra cost as I don't live in Britain, the dealer polite, or rather astonished that I could find anything to complain of.....Sent me another replacement, every bit as awful! Bent blade (do you need to krink single blades...?) As many gaps as an air-intake...horn peeling away from liners, liners full of brass shavings, sharp raised pins, raised spring on open and very difficult to open (not that there is much point in opening it) Quite frankly THE poorest knife I've ever come across. So I wont be donating my money to their company again.

Pity, as the knife is a nice pattern, but the execution is shameful. You should have much better luck with Trevor Ablett, I'm pleased with one of his Barlow knives and I'd advise spending your money there.

I think that it is a SBJ that got lost and you got the Booty prize.! Whoever sent that to you must have been drinking
the wrong stuff.***

Bad news about the water heater! Looking on the bright side, I have serious doubts that satisfaction would have followed any replacement the dealer could have sent you. To me this looks like the best solution:)
