Yangdu's Sherpa Crow blade weighs 22.5 ounces and is 18" long. She says the blade is relatively flush with a cutting board service and could be used in the kitchen or camp. I suggested HI make a smaller version. Yangdu is going to request a 15" and an 13", if I remember correctly, as well as the short sword 18".

Is there interest in the Sherpa Crow Knife?
(I think there is great interest)

thanks

strong potential interest yup. especially in nice hardwoods - dark - perhaps american persimmon (black - like ebony) :) i know, crow black - horn - but premium horn. almost every single horn handle i have has flaws. starting to not like that.

Bladite- Were at least some of your horn handled blades DOD? That makes a difference.
But I've quoted you again because I think Yangdu needs to make note of this also. If we're going to have a Crow blade, with a crow handle, it ought to be premium, as you say.

even at this late stage of HIKV, i was unaware that a DOTD was less than pefection unless stated as such. "10/10 rig" and most of them ARE perfect. no complaints on that score. premium goodness.

still, horn is a natural material, and it lives a rough life from buffalo expiring to reno to here. it has to be treated well or else. the woods seem better able to stand the shocks, and i like the variety in wood more i guess...

that reminds me, what IS the life cycle and use of a buffalo in india/nepal? i'm under the naieve impression they're treated well and not eaten and all that. or is that just certain areas and/or cultural variances?

bladite

I don't know about the Buffalos- it's the Cattle that are sacred and not eaten.

Horn is a natural material and can crack. So can wood.

I think the 13" is going to be a winner. You can carry it. Skin a deer. Slice an onion. If these are popular HI might standardize at 2 or 3 sizes.

other thoughts... looking at:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392704
as a reference...

i'm thinking that the sheath rocks... especially the color.

the tsuba/hilt/than... it's square in the pictures, i'd prefer either oval, or none, but that's me. if engraved at all (yeah, i know added cost), that would rock all the more.

13" sounds like a good common wearing size, an the next up, i'm not sure what would be done with that except as a pure chef knife in the kitchen or as a STOUT camp based knife.

I think the 13" is going to be the one that ends up being carried around and used.
As for the guard, I think the simple square will keep production costs down. I think we'd better wait for some prototypes before we change too many things.

Skip the guard altogether, and I'd gladly pre-pay for one of the 13" knives. Then again (thinking out loud here for the benefit of others), that big square guard gives a lot of latitude for reshaping to suit a feller's fancy.

i find square guards hurty :> and wear on the sheath and clothes and ...

now if you want changes and requirements... oh boy! the blade must be forged at night, and blessed by 3 crow witches in sacred waters, each sheath must have a crow feather, and the handles must be soaked in the holy nectar from the aroogala flower, but only during the first bloom. while facing north :>

Munk, you have been around here long enough to know the answer to my question, so here goes......

I also believed, by reading many posts on this forum, that only if a DOTD item is listed as having a flaw (visual or otherwise), that it would be 1st quality. Is this the case?

Thanks in advance :)

Exactly! I would just round it and dress it up a bit. Count me in Munk, as long as they don't cost anything. ;)

Very interested in this blade. A 13" would be awesome, but I really like the idea of a 15". Very nice design, would love to see it with a wood handle.

Jimmy; Bill was and now Yangdu hopes to be clear on what product they are offering in a DOD and what shape it's in. I don't know if that means all possible blems are listed. If Yangdu says 10/10 though, it will be.

With horn though, it is not improbable to purchase the blade, and after being home a couple weeks, for it to develope a hair line crack.

I think we'd all like to see it.

18" for me, with the square guard replaced with one of the beautiful "dragon" ones like are on the katana (tsuba)... then it's a GO. How cool would that be...

Mike

As I posted that crows were raising a ruckus out back. Three of them were trying to get the baby birds out of a nest next door. Have seen them do that. Bastids won't just go eat garbage, no. Ran for the scoped .22.

Hope they come back.

Must be an omen about the crow knife.

I agree with lefthandblack, that a 15" wood version would be awesome.
