the perfect compliment to any usable sword in my mind would be an equally functional shield. i have searched but cant seem to find shields that are any more than decorations. where would those of you who are in the know go to find something that you would trust. also what types of shields do any of you have. there must be some who collect them. i would like to see some examples and have discussion on the types you like and their strengths. anything from rawhide indian shields to Kevlar ballistic shields and roman shields. pics would be great if you have any.

thanks in advance.

Have you checked out the Legion XX site? They have pics and some discussion of Roman sheilds (I think). If you want the skinny on saxon sheilds I can forward you a book title (neat little book, it does go into saxon sheild construction and typical thickness).

you might want to look into bucklers. they are small and very handy round shields, 8 to 15 inches in diameter. they were used in sword and buckler fighting, a fast style of fighting usually used with the side sword (spado de lato) in the late 15th to early 17th centuries. you can find them at brothersmith swords (15", $69.95) and revival.us (10", $64.95) if you want to become a swashbuckler. good hunting.
