A guy is interested in one of my knives, but he is in Russia. Anyone have actual experience with this and KNOW the right answer? I am inclined not to ship it.

Hope this is okay in this section of the forum.

I can't help you with the right answer, but I received a knife from Russia without problems. I don't see why the opposite can't work.

I don't do international and especially to Russia. Its not so much the people you are dealing with but I have heard too many horror stories of knives not making it to customers because of postal workers stealing the items. The only way to cover your butt is to use a company like UPS or fed ex. Because they are global shippers. If you use the cheaper postal system your insurance ends once the receiving postal system takes control. But shipping to Russia via fed ex is expensive. I personally wouldn't do it. There are just too many things that can go wrong with no recourse. And if he pays via paypal standard payment method he is damn near guaranteed to get his money back no matter what happens as paypal is very much skewed in the favor of the buyer. But I hear paypal does not cover anything customs related. Its definitely your call. And many call me paranoid for not wanting to do international shipping. But I would rather knock my price down a couple bucks, sell locally and know I have recourse in the event of an issue.

Only place I've ever sold to that gave me trouble was Russia. I did 3 times on eBay and while I didn't ship out of the USA, (they had a proxy ship it after buying) 2 of the 3 tried to threaten me with bad feedback , in order to try and get some money back from me. I didn't give in and both times received bad feedback, over deals where nothing was really wrong.

Like I said, I am not sure I would do it. It is on eBay so I would use their global shipping program. I just don't know if it is legal>>>>>

Living in Russia, I have risked buying a knive from the US just once and got it without problems. However, that was a 3 incher. Knives with blades longer than 4 inches are generally banned so you may expect such a knife to be confiscated. On the other hand, none of 200+ of my ebay purchases have ever been stolen, so this is probably just a myth.

You are entitled to ship your knives to wherever you feel confortable doing so, and also selling to whomever you feel comfortable selling to.

It helps a lot if you make that clear up front.

I personally would only ship a knife outside of NA if the buyer selected and paid for the method and took full responsibility for whatever may happen once it leaves NA soil.

I can't know all the rules/laws/and how postal services work in every country. There are nuances (to put it nicely)

I've shipped to Russia. Basically, fedex is the best way but also expensive. DHL is also an option and UPS. Normal post can be used but Russia post is notoriously unreliable and slow, if not lost due to corruption. That comes from Russian friends. Small knives usually aren't a problem but larger and rare stuff is. Also, mark it as "camp tool" which isn't lying. The words knife and extra insurance are baits (to Russian post).

Hope that information helps.

Thanks for the info guys. I will see what happens with the guy and go from there. If he gets serious, I guess that I have to make a decision......

I have done so, using USPS. SVTfreak's advice above is good. And make sure the buyer understands it's at his/her own risk. I've gotten 2 nice CRK's into Russia, and one out of there.

eBay won't ship knives through their global shipping.

That's interesting. I thought that was the best way to get "sharp and pointies" from Europe.

Is that a recent policy change? In the last 18 months, I have had 1 Sheffield Bowie knife, 8 axes and 4 bayonets come from the UK via global shipping, and another 19 bayonets come from Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Creete (also Greece, but different:D), Latvia, Poland, Czech, Russia, Sweden and Finland. The shipping seems to a little more expensive, but I figured that the "shipper protection" services was why so many sellers started using it.

Maybe Ebay doesn't think bayonets and axes are "real" knives. :D

Or is it only for items LEAVING The US that it is not allowed? I've never shipped anything (knife related) to Europe.

I shipped an Al Mar Hawk to Russia previously. Made it clear to the buyer that it was not my responsibility after it left my hands and he was totally fine with it. I shipped USPS. Everything worked out fine. I believe the buyer asked me to include some sort of paperwork indicating that the knife was legal in Russia. Don't recall exactly, it was in Russian. But it worked out OK. Hope this information helps.

I have shipped to Russia and other parts of the world.

The problem with that is once it is out of US hands. It goes up in the air if will arrive.
Customs confiscation.... Gets lost...THEFT....and then the buyer makes a PP claim against you and you get boned
for something that is out of your hands.

So I usually have the buyer send payment as F&F.. They know the risk.

As for shipping knives... Send it.
