Shipping a carbon steel knife?

I'm about to ship a knife and I would normally ship in a padded knife case but I gave away my last one. Any clever suggestions for packing up a carbon steel knife to ship? I want to avoid shipping it in the sheath. Thanks!

Wrap the blade in a double layer of corrugated cardboard and tape tight. Then wrap the entire knife in cardboard and tape up. Put bubble wrap around it. Wrap sheath in a separate piece of bubble wrap. Pack snuggly in a Priority mailer box and ship.

I wrap it in a lightly oiled cloth and zip tie it in several spots to a board or stout cardboard then package as normal with bubble wrap etc. The idea being avoiding damage to the knife or mail carrier in shipping.

I totally tape the box to make it water proof or put the knife in a plastic bag, mail can get wet.

I would make sure the tip is protected by a piece wood. A layer of VIP paper would be nice also as is something like RIG grease. The the cardboard and bubble wrap .

Thanks mete, I have tip protectors. I was thinking about an oiled piece of wax paper on the blade, any thoughts on that?

There is no reason why a simple wiping with an oiled cloth won't work.
As well, I ship everything in a wooden box. It's amazingly cheap and I know of no better protection.

Nice Karl! But some of us haven't the skills to make such a nice wooden box. ;)

I wonder is shipping a stainless knife is any different than a carbon one?

Wipe it down with mineral Oil and put it in a Cardboard tube with the tip against a padded end, using paper or old t-shirt material.

I've just been putting a coat of Renaissance Wax on mine before shipping. Any reason that isn't a good idea? No issues so far.

It's just a wooden box. :p
1x material ripped into strips. Buy a sheet of 1/4" underlayment and rip for the sides.
Why wrap it in paper?
If a fella can't make one of these, he sure as heck can't build a knife.

Wipe the blade down with Eezox before shipping and don't worry about the rust. Only a wax works better at rust prevention, in my experience.

Screws indexed of course. :p

Sure wouldn't want to overlook that...LOL...

I ship all carbon or Damascus blades wrapped in Brownell's VCI paper, then a cardboard
cover...slightly wider/longer than the blade.

I think one time I figured these boxes cost me less than a dollar.
And I'm not always trying to find packaging for the knives.
I buy an eight foot 1X10 and rip it on the table saw into strips for the frames.
I buy 4X8 sheets of 1/4" underlayment for about 8 dollars.
I get a LOT!! of these boxes for only a few dollars. Stack the strips up in the corner and then cut them as I need them.
And they are so protective you can stand on the box.
Pretty cheap insurance, and it impresses the customers all to hell. :D

I wipe the blades with whatever oil or grease happens to be in the immediate area when I'm boxing up the knife.
Tracy Mickley has plastic tip protectors on his site.
I but terry cloth cleaning cloths in the auto section at Walmart to wrap the knife in. They come in packages of 8 or 10 or something like that for 5 bucks.
Put the knife in a zippered pouch that you can get for three bucks.
So, all in all, I have about 5 dollars in packaging, but the knife is protected, shipping is REALLY!! protected, and the customers are always thrilled to be removing all those screws.
