Shipping Collection

I have relocated my collection several times, and each time I transport them personally in my car/truck.

That's not possible in my case. I'd consider taking them on my airline flight if not for possible theft.
Thanks

It depends on the value.

I've never had a problem with USPS Express Mail. FedEx overnight is also well-reputed.

If any are especially valuable, use USPS Registered Mail.

Keep in mind that the cost of moving for a new job may be tax-deductible. So, keep all receipts for all expenses related to the move.

Thanks guys. I did consider the options you mentioned. Glad to not hear of any lost collections.
What about wrapping, or packing the knives individually. Should I ship in sheaths, or wrap in cloth etc.

I'd definitely go USPS or FedEx, insured and overnight. The less time spent sitting around, the less likelihood of them vanishing.

I'd ship the ones that have them in their sheaths, and folders or the ones that don't have sheaths I'd wrap in newspaper (or cloth... little difference), then pack them up tightly with extra newspaper or cloth to prevent them shifting or the box from rattling.

Boy, I wish I was looking forward to opening a box of 50 knives delivered to my door.

Oh, you will. It happens from time-to-time. No service is perfect. The goal is to choose a service with a good record of not loosing packages in the first place and in dealing with the problem when packages are lost.

FedEx is particularly nice because they have real-time tracking. Don't be deceived; neither UPS or USPS have real-time tracking. It is a very difficult feature for a package delivery company to add to an existing system. FedEx being a relatively new carrier, designed it into their system from day one.

USPS Priority Mail has a good record.

USPS Registered is expensive, but has almost air-tight security. The Hope Diamond was sent to the Smithsonian via USPS Registered Mail. Lots of highly-valuable articles, well-exceeding ANY knife, are sent via USPS Registered everyday. But, it is expensive, so it would be a waste of money for most common knives.

Theft from packages can be a problem. ULine offers (and you can get at some office supply places) "Pilfer-proof" tape http://www.uline.com/Browse_Listing_3063.asp which gives some protection. For real protection, use ULine's USecure tape. http://www.uline.com/ProductDetail.asp?model=S-6724&ref=3079 This stuff is expensive, $40 a roll (they do sell single rolls), but a roll is 60 yards which is enough to seal thirty or fourty of the smaller-size boxes that might typically be used for sending knives.

Boxes for USPS Registered must be sealed up with the Post Office's special paper tape. Boxes for Registered must also be either new or in nearly-new condition with no other tape on them. I always get a new box and pack it and then take it unsealed to the Post Office and let them seal it because they are very picky.

Many knives are small and can easily work themselves out of a box in transit. So, make them bigger by wrapping them in bubble wrap and sealing the bubble wrap on all sides with packing tape.
