Hey Yall,

Im sending a knife (ZT 0550) to get a little work done and have a quick question:

When you ship USPS flat rate do you guys get insurance?

I was going to go ahead and pay up for insurance both ways but is it really necessary?

Cheers

Are you okay losing the knife and getting nothing in return?

The insurance is for the seller, why risk the loss of a $150.00 knife over just a few dollars?

Flat rate includes tracking only, but $200 of insurance is only a couple of dollars. However, if you are only sending one knife, it is cheaper to box it (or padded envelope) and have them mail it by weight. This difference in price will give you the insurance money:thumbup:

KAI specifically asks that no padded envelopes be used. Get a box, pay your $7-8 with insurance included and case closed. They take it from there.

I always use USPS Priority shipping with their box and get the insurance for replacement value on the knife...peace of mind is worth it.

Its going to a fellow BF member for some customizing.

I thought insurance was probably a good idea but figured it wouldnt hurt to see what everyone thought.

I will send it USPS priority with $300 of insurance.

Thanks for the help!

Generally, I insure anything over $100 or something with sentimental value. Shipping by weight with a cheap padded envelope is usually cheaper than flat rate for a single knife though, as previously stated.

And shipping a knife in a "cheap padded envelope" just to save a few bucks isn't the smartest thing to do for a reliable outcome.

Use a box... READ ME.

It all depends on the worth of the knife to you. Typically, usps is reliable, but packages are lost. Since you mention you are getting some custom work done, I assume the knife is definitely worth more to you than its mere street price. Insurance worth $200 and above costs $5.10 if memory serves me right. I'd say get it, and ship first class secured in a box. Priority gets there in 2 days, while first class is 3 to 4.

I shipped priority with $300 of insurance it should be there tomorrow. It will be sent priority back the same way. I'm glad I did it, as y'all said the piece of mind is worth it. Can't wait to get it back ( hopefully late next week)!
