I have an order for Austria, and the USPS customs info says that "Arms and Weapons" are prohibited. I know they hunt there, but not sure what the customs officials would do with a knife. It's fixed blade with a 4" edge.

Any info or advice?

I found this disclaimer on a knife auction listing on an undisclosed site.

Bidders from outside United States of America need to understand and comply with the following: We cannot be responsible for any tariffs, customs restrictions or other regulations that apply in countries outside United States. We encourage you to speak with your Customs office if you have any questions. Do not order items that are illegal to import into your country. Laws are different in every country. It is the customer's responsibility to check with their Customs office to see if their country permits the shipment of our goods to their country. Thanks - I wonder what his customs will tell him? I didn't bother asking USPS about it because I couldn't summon the inner strength I figured it would take to endure the hassle. But maybe I'm too much of a pessimist....

The problem isn't on your end, its on his. Just don't put "knife" anywhere on the outside of the package, only write it on the declaration form you might have to fill out. No need to draw attention, similar to when you ship firearms in the US. The x-ray machine will identify what it is when it goes through Austrian customs anyway. As long as you're honest you shouldn't have any trouble. He might have to pay an import tax when he picks it up, but that's his responsibility.

The word CUTLERY properly defines the contents of a package containing knives and raises no red flags. Get in the habit of using it on international shipments.

George is right. I have shipped to Aussie-land, England, Thailand, Canada, and always use the word "Cutlery" or "Camping Cutlery".

Never had any problems.

Customs inspectors can see a package full of knives labeled as "tools" as an attempt to decieve and might come down hard on it.

I used to hate shipping overseas it really was painful. Now its really easy I tell them the only way I will ship is by using USPS International Express by using this option you receive a real time tracking number.

Case and point I had a package I sent over during Christmas a few knives shirts about a 1000.00 in product. Well it had insufficient address and was returned this last week. I truly believe it would not have found it's way home had I not used International express?

Is it expensive yep but it is worth it.

I also list my knives as "Hand Tools" on the customs tag
