Shipping overseas

Hey guys,

I appreciate all your thoughts and contributions. I realise that it is more of a hassle, but I guess it comes down to the individual concerned and the circumstances of the moment.

I can make PayPal payments, and this is how I pay for all my transactions. I always request shipping via USPS Priority International and have found it to be very reliable. I have never taken insurance on an item, as it increases the cost expotentially. So far nothing has gone astray, and I get a bunch of stuff from the USA, mostly sharps and some fancy flashlights. :D

I guess the bone of contention is often the description of contents and the actual value. I have no probs with the seller calling the contents a knife. The value, unfortunately, is another matter. You all saw BigBrick's post about the customs duties he had to pay. It is brutal, believe me, and in my opinion, totally unjustified.

However, I would never expect someone to do something they weren't comfortable with. It is entirely the seller's perogative.

I already have had an offer from someone here as a result of this post, and I thank all of you who have extended similar offers. Your willingness to go the extra mile IS greatly appreciated by me and I'm sure by other brothers around the world.

Glad to hear it. But I'm not surprised.

It is interesting seeing concerns expressed in some of these posts about requests to misrepresent contents and values.

I live in Australia and buy a lot of stuff from overseas, mainly the US and though my comments relate solely to the Australian situation, you are not doing your buyers any favours if you misrepresent.

I have never been charged tax or duty on any imported item, knife or otherwise. Customs officers are not fools and know that shiny thing in the sheath is worth more than five dollars. All you are achieving by misrepresenting is drawing attention to the fact that you are dishonest. The buyer won't be taxed anyway so what is gained?

Same goes for contents. Most goods arriving in Australia by post are opened or x-rayed by Customs. They know what is in the box so calling it something else simply sends the message that you are trying to fool them. Again, no advantage but it generates negative attitudes towards the buyer.

I do not speak in relation to other countries but if you are selling to someone in Australia you are doing them a favour by being absolutely straight with the paperwork.

I can certainly understand people that don't like the idea of shipping over the Atlantic. Some countries are pretty 'safe' to ship to, in terms of customs and post office being rather reliable, but some are a crap shoot. I'm just glad there are people who will ship overseas. Would be very hard to acquire INFI over here otherwise. Skunk ships very quickly, I've noticed. No, make that ridiculously quickly. As for the secondary market, I'm glad to hear some of the HOGs ship overseas, too. I wouldn't ask anyone to falsify the value of the knife for customs. Paying huge customs over here is a pain in the ass, but that's life. :D

meknifemanyoudinner and I just made a trade. He's in the Netherlands and we both shipped out yesterday.

It is my first sale/trade over there and I have had thought's of "what if one is lost after it gets out of the sent from countries hands"

He said he has never had a problem, so I keep telling myself it will go smooth.

I have hesitated to do it, but if this one goes smooth I may open my sales to all.

Well I often sell to non US INFI fans :) . My only concern is that they assume all risk and pay any extra shipping.

Their laws are their concerns - and I ship as requested. I am not an expert on the laws of the world nor to decide if their countries exorbant social demands require a blood thrisy tax. They say the knife - camp tool or what ever is worth this much and then pay me more that is their business - and not my issue.

But ya - I get the money up front. Heck if I do not know you, I do the same for the contential US too :)

Its all good :)

The situation in So. Africa is quite different. The duty was in excess of 30% when I lived there.

Knife pricing in Belgium is disgusting

example

Europe CRKT M16-14 price 104€ = 149 $

USA CRKT M16-14 price 43,75$

Europe Spyderco Military C36 192€ = 275 $

USA Spyderco Military C36 124 $

understand why we like to buy from the USA?

and almost every WTS i see is "CONUS only" :grumpy:

How do those numbers look after you pay all the various import fees?

It's a similar story in Britain. And of course there are no Busse distributors here anyway.

Many prices are a higher number of pounds than the number of dollars they are in the US. And given that it's around $2 = £1 at the moment, it's ridiculous. It's just like Mongo-man says here as well. And it's not just US products, it's even our own and European ones. I've bought things from the US that are made in England, cheaper than I can buy them here. Including shipping! Tell me that isn't atrocious.

Personally, I see being charged huge taxes to import something for personal use, that can't even be bought from a shop here, as nothing more than theft. But the government does it, so it's legal and 'right'.

We are really taxed to the hilt in Britain. Our petrol (gasoline) is currently $7.55 per gallon! Mostly tax. Plus we pay road tax, and congestion charges, and tolls, and are told it's to encourage us to use the (ridiculously useless) public transport.

Their latest tax proposal is more tax on take-away food, to stop us getting fat. It's already taxed like everything else. Maybe a better idea would be a tax-cut on 'healthy' foods - no, wait, this is Britain. There is no carrot, only the stick.

Trouble is the government is currently losing money from reduced cigarette sales, so they have to find something to 'blame' for something so they can get the tax back, 'for our own good'.

Sometimes (quite often) I hate this rotten country!

Import taxes are really a pain in the ....:foot: Knifeprice+shippingprice*tax*importtax so usually ill have to have half of knifeprice extra to stay on the safe side  but once the infi is in hand i can take it again :p

Hey All,
I've done numeruous businesses with US- shops, companies, and forum members. ALL went smoothly. I've purchased fishing rods, cymbals, drums....and KNIFES, of course without any problems. Yes, sometimes customs can make the purchase a bitt bitter, but that's our problem, not the seller's...
Here, in Hungary, they pack on the price around 30% more...:barf:but sometimes the forum-purchases just slips through the customs, depending of the shipping method...
Anyway i thank to everyone who is willing to deal with me. oink-oink.:D
