I have a friend, returning to her home in Switerzland, who wants to take/ship a sword acquired here (in the US) back with her. What sort of hoops must she jump through to check it on the plane – if this is possible. And if it is not possible, can someone recommend a shipper &c?

You don't need to jump through any hoops to take a sword in your CHECKED luggage on an airplane. You just need to pack it really well inside a hard shell suitcase. If the sword is really valuable, you might want to check on whatever the airline can offer in the way of special transport / insurance for valuables.

I don't think there's any way in the world you can take a sword with you into the passenger cabin of an airplane - at least I hope there's not.

One more thing: importation of symetrically ground "knives or knifoid things" (daggers) is strictly prohibited, if they are SHORTER than 30 cm (aka ~12"), so no problem for a "real sword".
