Does anyone have experience shipping a knife to Australia from the U.S.?
Any advice appreciated as have never sent further than Canada.
Thanks VM.

I have never done so myself but I have heard you have to take the blade out of the knife and ship it as two pieces because of some stupid anti-knife laws.

I would ask whoever you are shipping to. I ent a Spyderco Folding karambit successfully. Tightened the pivot down so it needed 2 hands and wasn't a "gravity knife". We all know how dangerous those gravity knives are.

Australian knife laws have just been relaxed. It used to be that folders were a problem but most of that has changed. We need an Australian to list what's OK now.

*Sigh*

All fixed blade knives are OK provided that they are not;

- trench knives (with a knuckle duster type handle)
- daggers/double edged (though if the buyer gets the appropriate and fairly easily obtained import permit they are OK)

Folders;

- no automatics/gravity
- no assisted

The so called "one handed opening/flick/gravity/centrifugal" issues and tests were repealed last year. There have been some ongoing issues with Flippers but when challenged ABF (Customs) have released the knives as the change to the interpretation of the import regs IS specific.

And yes, lots new folders have been imported in numbers since the change to Regs.

KenHash...

Shipping to Australia has always been very easy .......I've always used USPS Priority and left the description simple either referring to the item as " knife" or "camping tool" and never listing with color, size or handle material on each form with the item arriving timely.

Australian knife laws have changed, I have imported flippers into Australia, opened by custome and released, most parcels don't get opened

As Andy has said, most knives are good to ship now. Spring assisted, autos and balisong are still out, as are trench knives. Daggers and other fighting knives will need more documentation (the buyer's job; they need police permission).

I would strongly advise against disassembling the knife; that just makes it look like you have something to hide.

I am yet to import a folder from the US but I have bought heaps of fixed blades from makers on here (in excess of 15 individual transactions and must be close to 30 knives). I have had one package opened by Customs. They left a note and sent it on to me :)

Make sure you package it well; it can take a couple of weeks to get here.

Feel free to PM if you want more info etc.

I have had no issues importing fixed blades ever. After the laws were changed last year I have imported several folders including flippers without any issues.

Exceptions as mentioned earlier are daggers, automatics, balisongs etc

Thank you very much everyone. The knife is a fixed blade (ghurka kukri) and it seems like there is no problem shipping with USPS intnl priority.
I have left it up to the buyer in Australia to decide and give the word. Again thanks to all.
