I'm shipping a knife (Gerber Mark I) to Canada via UPS...should there be any problems getting across and if so will I be liabel?

Customs will check the knife to see if, in their opinion, it's legal. Balisongs and autos probably will not get through. Knives that can be flicked open may also be stopped, so if it's a folder, tighten the pivot pin!
If the Mk I is a fixed blade like the Mk II, there shouldn't be a problem.
Also, I never use UPS Ground. In addition to the taxes [15%], UPS charges a "brokerage fee" that is $30 or more, which is robbery. If you send it UPS Air or expedited, they absorb the cost so it winds up costing about the same as ground. I hate UPS. I prefer just about any other delivery method.

I would reccomend don't do it:

I spent $15 to ship a spyderco to canada a month ago for a passaround and it's still not there.

I can't file a claim until I file an inquiry. The local PO seems to think that the normal wait time is 2 months to clear customs.

Unfortunaely, if/when the Impala makes it through, I probably won't be shipping anything to Canada again.

Hi, i order from www.knifeworks.com

I have not had a single shipping / customs problem. Half of my knives listed bellow are bought from Roger. Shipping cost $19.50 but it is fast (3days) and no customs charges. Roger is highly recommended amongst Baldeforums.com members.

Well I use the UPS system through my work and I get the company discount. I'm not really concerned about the cost...just what will happen when it reaches the border.

I just want to second this - I just placed my second order from knifeworks.com ... the first one was over $200, and I was very surprised to not have to pay any taxes or customs charges when it got here. It only took about 4 days to get here, once he shipped it. I'll definetly be buying from him more in future.

Hey CrazyNicky,

Last year i bought a BM 942 from the States and had it shipped UPS, it was buttery smooth when i got it. (pivot not really tightened)
Although, they didn't open the package at customs. The delivery time was pretty quick, probably around 6-9 days.

The only problem was the brokerage fee's and duty's that pushed the price of the knive $50 higher than i originally expected.

But if that's not an issue, it should be fine.

Good luck,

Jared

I do my online buying from El Paso, Tx... mail takes about 1-2 weeks, d/p on if customs agents are being a&#115sholes that week.

I pay taxes and duty on my knives, and 80% of my package get opened (hmm... "hand tool, weight 6oz, $100USD insured"), and still 2weeks max.

USPS is great for US->Can mail, I use Xpresspost for Can->US mail(as well as canadian mailing). UPS, FedEx, and Purolator all add brokerage fees which drive the cost up, but next day(or 2) is pretty much guarenteed.

I am telling all the Canadian knifenutz that www.knifeworks.com is the place to go. Fast shipping time, best prices, no brokerage fees, and no custom charges. Roger personally called me at home (long distance) a few times to ask me what i wanted and how he could help me. He ans. every e-mail within 1 day or so. He personally ordered a 710HS when no one had one in stock. His prices and service is hard to beat.

Guys, how about the other way around. Any problems/delays shipping from Canada to the US?

only 2 so far... shipped a FRN PE Merlin to a guy in the southern US, and it took 17days... on 3-5 businessday xpresspost, air... and that was this xmas...

other was in feb 02, a CE wenger jr, to Jeff Smith(u812), and took 2 weeks. I sent air, expecting 3 business days, and it went ground after customs for some reason.
