Mates,

Hope this is the right forum for my question. Looking to ship a package containing a bladed hand tool to a forum mate in Canada. Have never shipped outside CONUS. I have read some posts here concerning potential customs issues, etc. Wanted to ask:

-From a purely technical aspect, are there any special forms/actions I need to complete for the shipping that will not be completed at the PO?

-From a practical aspect, is there anything I need to do to try and make the process of getting the knife to the buyer as smooth as possible?

Thanks for any advice.

As long as it's legal to own up here it shouldn't be an issue. I've never had a problem receiving knives from USA.

If it's a folder make sure to tighten the pivot so the blade doesn't swing freely aka some benchmades or knives with weak detentes; that's the only roadblock I've heard of from customs. (the dreaded "gravity knife" folder...)

I ship to Canada and other countries on a regular basis and Canada is way up there with seamlessness.
I generally mark the knife as a Camp Tool.
There is a customs form that will have to be filled out at the PO.

Thanks, guys.

Try to use priority or first class USPS international NOT other carriers (no UPS, no FedEx etc). They are many ways you can fill out paperwork I feel most collectors up here use their own distinctive ways. Main thing make sure that the blade is tighten pretty well to the point that is difficult enough to open even with two hands. Worst comes to worst IF the knife gets detained you can always get it back by exporting the knife out of customs to you in US, so at least you can't loose the item. The more you ship to Canada you better you will get at it ;) . you can always email any of us up here for more tips or questions ;) Trust me it is not as bad as what people say it is if you know what you are doing!!

Yep, I've found USPS is the way to go for when folks ship anything to me. No problems yet... knock on wood. I've had things come in with the customs forms a bunch of ways. Gift, merchandise, warranty repair etc. and none have been with CBSA for more than 4 hours (if tracking is to be believed). As others stated, try and make sure the pivot is tight IF it's inherently loose. You should be ok though so long as you can't just shake the blade out or open.

If you're sending a fixed blade, should be even quicker cause the chances they'll open a fixed blade pkg is just about zero (in my experience). Some of my folders have been opened for inspection, but they've done a surprisingly good job of repacking and taping up the pkg again. Anyway, best of luck, I'm sure it'll go smoothly!

I agree with USPS. I've shipped folders to Canada on several occasions with never a problem. I do mark the customs form as "pocket knife". I also use a zip tie on knives with opening holes, or a locked down pivot (no one's gonna open it until it's loosened up) for studs or disks.

Like others have said, tighten pivots, make sure it is secured well in the packaging, and use USPS- tracking can be followed right to our door, DO NOT LET ANYBODY TELL YOU OTHERWISE! But make sure not to lie on the form. If it isn't a gift or a return please don't mark it as so. I've been put on the CBSA watch list from too many people using gift without me asking. I end up having to pay customs on maybe 1/10 shipments, so I find it not worth it not being honest.

I appreciate you doing business with fellow country persons! I appreciate it!
