Hi,

Quite a number of dealers who sell either knives or sharpening equipment does not want to ship to Canada. I wonder why they lumped us with the rest of the world when we are practically like another "state" geographically speaking (I'm not trying to troll for trouble). I'm sure the safeguards that the dealers make to U.S. buyers would be equally effective for Canadian residents. If the risk is too high through credit cards, can't we send a post office money order instead, won't that be really safe for the dealers?

I have yet to run into any dealer that won't ship to Canada. Some will not ship via USPS as I would prefer, but all that I have been in contact with will ship here.

USPS International Money Orders work fine for Canada. I'm sure the equivalent is available for Canada to the US. The only question arising in shipping north is your Customs being a little twitchy about knives that can be centrifugally snapped open. I have read that transit time can be slow, but it's not like Canada is a major internet center of interest. :D

Except for the incontrovertibly septentrional Keith Montgomery! :grumpy:

:p

Hi Esav,

Both these 2 dealers I contacted won't ship to Canada. I wanted to buy some benchstones not knives. That shouldn't be a problem at the border, also if they are afraid of internet fraud, they can insist on payment first through Canadian post office money orders in US$ which is as good as U S postal money orders. Clear the money order then ship, why can't it be done?

I do feel for International consumers that are affected by people reluctant to ship outside the USA.As Keith pointed out there are many that ship to Canada. The problem with shipping outside the US ,is it makes it easier to pull CC scams, difficult to prosecute or recover losses. There are also different Laws,Customs,Couriers services to deal with in addition.
If a dealer ships a knife and a Customs Inspector flicks it open, then say bye-bye to the knife, and where does that put the dealer when you don't get your knife? People get pissed when you exclude them, but looking at it from the otherside, and people have valid reasons for those policies imo.

Bill, must have crossed post.Well, exporting stones shouldn't create any hassles with Customs. Why they won't is a question you'll have to have them explain. Some people just won't bother shipping outside the US.I suggest finding a dealer that will.

Do you have to special tax or anythign to sell in Canada or are there special regulations that a dealer must follow?

Hi Esav,

I have bought from New Graham a couple of times, they were great to deal with. They don't stock what I'm trying to buy now. New Graham has a big knife inventory but they don't stock much on sharpeners.

Thanks

Hi Thestaber,

There are no special conditions for importing benchstones into Canada. The (the dealers) just have to fill in a form declaring the value of the goods. We have to pay a 7 % goods and services tax when we collect it from Canada Post.

Thanks

Had no problems getting any fixed blades but recently has a Spyderco stolen by Canada Customs. My appeal was turned down, that customs officer must have really wanted that Spyderco knife for himself. Now I still to fixed blades knives from the US. Kinda dumb as you can buy Spyderco everywhere in Canada and a local dollar store has flip open knives by the dozen.

It is just not knives though, Golite (hiking gear) won't ship to Canada and are very unhelpfull, same with Mountain House foods, and all US companies selling gas masks.

What really gets my goat is people on various fourms that won't trade/sell to Canadians. Just no need for it. I trade about 75/25 US/Canada and never been disappointed with a trade or sale with an American. For me, it is generally cheaper to ship to the US than within Canada.

I live up here in Canada and I've bought a few knives from Josh at www.pvk.com. I've received the knives on-time and I don't think that customs even saw them the way that he ships. I think you can pretty much order whatever you want and be pretty sure you'll get it.

One other great thing about www.pvk.com is that only items that are in stock are shown, and Josh has a lot of great stuff, especially Microtech.

Give him a call and ask him about shipping and what he can send you. Don't let some idiot at customs with a mangled interpretation of the law decide on what you can and can't have.

Good luck! :)
