I have someone interested in buying a knife from me, but he's currently in China, and will likely be there for the foreseeable future. Anyone have any experience with shipping there? I don't want to commit to him if there's any chance that things will be a clusterf@$k...

I have shipped 7- 4" x 8" x 1", 10oz packages to china, and as far as I know they have all made it without problems, USPS doesn't offer delivery conformation, cant say anything about the other carriers

On the other side, I have received a lot of e-packets with electronics from china without problems

My wife has shipped a couple smaller packages(maybe 10"x6") there..Flint & Steel strikers..No problems..

...but did the packages contain knives? That seems to be the stickler. He works with an import/export agent, and the agent told him not to bother, that there's too many pitfalls. I just want to be certain that's not BS...

Thanks for the responses, guys.

No knives in my packages, But in a ten minute read on the topic, china has had several knife attacks including school children in the last few years and have really started cracking down on what type of knives you can carry, knives with a point less then 60 degree's are illegal, I think that covers everything including butter knives and wood spoons ;0)

There are some very serious collectors in China so I don't think shipping knives in is an issue.

Knives must go FedEx..........They are banned from postal traffic...(China's Regs)....
Not sure what the difference is, but this is what the FedEx HQ folks told me...

If you have a Fedex account ask your local rep for the Fedex great rates phone number, It's striclty for account holders. Significantly cheaper.

A good friend and maker spends a lot of time over there and he assures me Chinese Customs will not allow any knives through. I would definitely check with FedEx first.

My mid tech has to be hand carried to Hong Kong to be shipped via DHL to me. I know that's not what you wanted to know exactly, but it might be germaine.

I've sent quite a few fixed blades to Hong Kong, they have gotten there quickly with no issues. I use insured USPS express mail. I'd look into the law on folders...
