I'm sending a knife to South Africa in the morning, is there anything I should know in advance? What is the best method, and does anyone have an idea on cost?

Thanks in advance....

Well, registered mail, or traceable mail is the best.

Once it reaches our customs a few things apply that the person you are sending it to must know.

Customs can ask a 20% markup + 14% VAT + customs duty.

Also, once in SA international tracking can't be done anymore.

Knifehunt,

Charge for USPS Express International, the $10.00 difference between Priority and Express is worth it to receive a knife and track it, if a problem then there is at least cover.

I only want Express Int. if I am purchasing from USA, it will also rid you of all the follow up emails and concern - if you are that way inclined, I like to know that things are received in good order from myself.

This way it will take the fastest path to South Africa, when arrived the Customs will inspect and it will be issued a Registered Mail number within SA, to be tracked to point of distribution by SA Post Office, either they will send you(the receiver) notice in your box, or you get a drive by from EMS agents- more the former than the latter.

Pay Pal is good, I always pay with PP, the receiver will have no way around paying the customs charge and shipping, The price you pay for living out of USA.

ps. do not lie on the forms, as if the receiver receives a few goodies from out of country, the Customs and Revenue department in SA keep a track on it.

For what it is worth,

Cheers,
Guy

Why do you say this, why not use Paypal?

Shipping to SA is very simple and straight forward.

I make a lot of Paypal transactions using the The Paypal Personal tab (NOT the gift option, I pay the fees) Then the seller feels much more secure. I have had a large number of packages, over many years from the US using USPS Express Mail International Insured without any problems.

As Guy said earlier, don't underinsure or undervalue the knife. That way if something does go wrong you can still claim from USPS insurance.

Please feel free to PM me if I can help or advise you in any way.

Cheers

Steven

I never suggest USPS for international deliveries. Use FedEx, EMS, DHL or similar courier company. They have better means to track & notify you of deliveries.

Pay the extra $ and avoid the problems.

Very expensive and no safer to South Africa than USPS Express Mail International which is fully trackable and can only be released with ID.
Personally when given the choice, I always use USPS.
